Thinking a bit more about this, I think it is correct. They could make zero alcohol beer and not make it addictive, so there is a choice there, in the design, it's not neutral, even though it is socially accepted. Then again I'm pretty anti-alcohol so perhaps I'm biased.

An extreme position perhaps that alcohol makers wouldn't like 😅

I don't know, if it is scientific knowledge that junk food or alcohol or what not is addictive (let's say) I would argue we can't pretend not intending to produce, design and sell something addictive.

You might be interested by the literature on online manipulation, although nobody seems to agree how to define manipulation. It won't give you an answer but it might be interesting.

Again I don't think making a beer taste 'better' means that it becomes more addictive. Selling it cheap, massively marketing it, adding a lot of sugar to it, those things, definitely.

I'm not sure I follow what you're saying. Did they made the cigarettes chemically more addictive? I don't know. Did they market them massively in movies etc and did everything possible to sell as much as possible? Of course, that's just what a business does.

If you introduce a super sugary alcohol drink to get young people to drink more alcohol, you're not trying to make a good drink, you're trying to get to customer base bigger even if they don't like alcohol's taste.

Yes but they are lying lol. When you introduce gambling in your shopping app, you're not trying in good faith to make the shopping app more pleasant, you're trying to use behavioural psychology to make people addicted

Intent+manipulation something like that

There are other techniques such as adding a lot of sugar, but then that's not per se trying to make the product taste better. Isn't intent the answer to the distinction you're trying to make?

Isn't alcohol addictive no matter its taste? I feel like price, availability and marketing are things that will get it more addictive than taste, at least, that's what prevention focuses on.
