Streaming services need new ways to grab audience attention. Either way, ridiculously entertaining watching the theory play out so quickly in real time.
However, if the episode itself is wrapped within a real world moment, a hyperreal blurring of fandom and sensationalism, theater and reality, than the finale only needs to exist as the conversation will be about the cultural moment of shock, and that is how it will be remembered.
The speed at which the theory took hold is a factor that is very interesting to me. It might mark a new chapter in the idea of streaming television. Final episodes simply do not live up to inflated viewer expectation.
I have not been so entertained by the internet in years, and if #conformitygate is real it would be one of the greatest television surprises of all time regardless of the actual content of the episode. Odds are infinitesimally low...but not zero.
