Actually, the og FF14 wasn't taken offline. It was continuing to get updates while A Realm Reborn was being developed to replace it.
Then they made the end of the game a canon event that players got to experience, with some player actions being made canon in ARR, like the Great Gobbue Wall.

Gen 3 Pokemon games are the easiest roms to find on the high seas, in vanilla flavor or any number of fan-enhanced romhacks.

AND because it's a digital download, don't they have the ability to simply decide you don't actually get to keep playing and shut down your access on a whim?
So you can't even say "well what if I just want the offline experience?" because you are not guaranteed access to that after buying it.
It is nakedly greedy of them.
Let's not forget that to access any online features you need to pay for Nintendo Online anyways, which otherwise comes with a catalogue of GBA games. So you likely still need to pay for online access on top of buying the game again.
If it wasn't already clear how anti-consumer Nintendo was, the way they're telling you to pay $20 for 20 year old games, separate from the rest of the virtual library, should be the neon sign.
They believe that people will pay them extra just because it has the Pokemon branding, so why not?
