The problem of pathocracy | BPS Do psychologists have a responsibility to help prevent ruthless, amoral people attaining positions of power? Steve Taylor considers the arguments.

"...pathocracy is a system of government 'wherein a small pathological minority takes control over a society of normal people'."

Of course they're going to tell you in polls that they prefer the things they have, rely on, and are familiar with over abstract benefits they have never seen or experienced! You learn nothing from that. Most people simply do not have informed, stable preferences beyond "what I already know."

The job title "farmer" has always been intentionally slippery in how most Americans use it.

But in the occupational stats, it's people who own the farm. (They may own all the land, rent some, or event rent all of it, but the farm is still their business that they own & operate.)

Many Americans hold contradictory opinions on the same policies Our new poll finds question wording can swing opinion by 20+ points on immigration, the budget, and transgender rights. That's a problem for people who use polls to tell politicians what voters want.

New post!
Many Americans hold contradictory opinions on the same policies. Question wording effects can swing opinions by 20+ points on immigration, the budget, and transgender rights.
That's a problem for people who interpret polls for a living.

The entire Democratic strategy debate — "moderate" or move left? fight or compromise? — is based on a misreading of data. Voters don't think Dems are too progressive; they think Dems are weak. The actual math on what to do about this isn't even close!

The travesty of liberalism — Crooked Timber

Many people quoting it, first saw it cited here: crookedtimber.org/2018/03/21/l...

I'm constantly trying (/failing) to get this point across.

If you're a trained expert in a field, then it may be worthwhile to question the scientific consensus of your peers.

If you're not, the scientific consensus is absolutely the best you can do and it's arbitrary foolishness to disregard it.

Some may be saying, “yes, we knew this”, but we don’t really know know until we see data like these.

And something we may not have known that this paper shows is that once a person gets into the right wing silo, we’ve lost them. Changing to the chronological feed does not bring them back.

Someone has sure already made this observation but the fact they can convert all those empty warehouses into prison camps means they could have converted them into housing, community centers, job training centers or, hell, libraries or schools all along. It’s always a matter of will not resources.
