Atlantic cod in the North Sea

🚨 Over HALF of UK #fishing catch limits have been set too high to be sustainable, AGAIN. Cod can now be overfished across all our waters & North Sea mackerel could also be put at grave risk. Our #ocean can’t take this. Govt MUST listen. Follow us to fight back! uk.oceana.org/reports/call...

Supertrawlers spent 7,380 hours fishing in UK Marine Protected Areas each year since Brexit - Greenpeace UK An investigation by Greenpeace UK reveals today that giant supertrawlers relentlessly continue to catch fish in the UK’s Marine Protected Areas, damaging precious marine habitats and fish populations,...

🚨 EXPOSED: A new Greenpeace investigation has revealed that supertrawlers spent 36,918 HOURS fishing in UK protected waters over the last five years.

Marine protected areas should be sanctuaries for ocean life, NOT a place for destructive industrial fishing.

I’m obsessed with fish that clean other fish: they remember their clients, much like a hairdresser I’m campaigning for legal protection for cleaner fish, because no one has done a proper assessment of the impact of removing them from Scottish reefs

Wrasse Fishing Activities Case Summary - Environmental Standards Scotland Consideration of the current arrangements in respect of wrasse fishing activities on protected areas and species in Scotland. Case Reference: IESS.24.029

Wrasse are a keystone species in inshore waters, ensuring the health of marine ecosystems 🐟

Good to see that the Scottish Gov now need to assess the impact of wrasse fishing on wider marine ecosystems before this year's fishing season in May.

Revealed: the largest escape of farmed salmon for a decade An unsecured hatch on a ship’s tank released about 80,000 salmon smolts during transportation in northern Scotland, putting the wild population at risk

“This incident underscores the urgent need for a complete reassessment of how we monitor and regulate the salmon farming industry. The health of our oceans and the integrity of our endangered wild salmon populations are at stake.”

AI has an environmental problem. Here’s what the world can do about that. The sprawling data centres that house AI servers churn out toxic electronic waste and are voracious consumers of electricity, which in most places is still produced from fossil fuels.

"A request made through ChatGPT, an AI-based virtual assistant, consumes 10 times the electricity of a Google Search"

This isn't a game. This is accelerated destruction via huge usage of power, water, resources etc. Stop using it - especially for messing about!!

Who is committed to climate red lines?
We analysed the #GE24 party election manifestos and scored them each on their commitments to a ban on LNG, a moratorium on data centres and eliminating energy poverty.
Consider who is committed to clear climate action when you vote on Friday! 🗣️🗯️🗳️

Very common question. Think of it this way: the Irish electoral system not only allows you to support the candidate(s) you like, but also to punish the ones you hate.

If you are genuinely passive about a batch of candidates, it’s ok to leave their boxes blank - but if you can rank them, you should!

"We are really at the edge of this precipice. In fact, I think we've fallen over it to be honest. So anything that happens needs to be radical and revolutionary".

A really interesting roadmap from Oceana! 🐟

I was away from Scotland during the UK general elections and could sign up for a postal vote so easily online. I have no idea why it's not the same in Ireland.
