He thinks science being political is bad, but of course science is political because political decisions directly affect science. What’s bad is when science is *politicized* And that’s exactly what he is doing.

He might have turned out to be a bit of a shit in real life, but damn if he didn’t write some excellent stories. I read Jurassic Park in 1991 in high school right after I got a job in a molecular biology lab. I was ready to go full mad scientist. Andromeda strain was terrifying.

I’m an NIH whistleblower. The scientific community cannot afford to avoid politics “Scientists are often encouraged to avoid politics. But this advice is outdated, if it was ever correct in the first place,” writes Jenna Norton, NIH whistleblower.

From @jenna-m-norton.bsky.social in @statnews.com: Someone asked if, given the consequences, I now regret my choice to speak up. I would, without question, make the same choice again. In the words of a fellow Bethesda Declaration signer, “You can get another job; you can’t get another soul.”

I saw another paper from some of their affiliates on NSEs if rabies vaccines in dogs (they claimed it tripled mortality in female puppies). Also had 100% participation…

I assume this is it? Although I bet this won’t be the last flagrant ethical violation we will hear about.

You have to wonder what other sorts of misdeeds we don’t know about. Aaby is basically at clumsily written movie villain levels of perfidy at this point. What other ethical transgressions might exist in the world of a power and ego driven “white savior” exploiting a vulnerable population?

You could have an entire course on RCT ethics focused just on the Bandim Health Project and you would have enough examples to cover pretty much every conceivable violation that exists.

Ladt i stikken Smuthul. Kontroversielt dansk vaccinestudie viser, at det er alt for nemt at lave uetisk forskning i Afrika, mener stribevis af eksperter. De vil have loven om menneskeforsøg lavet om.

New Weekendavisen just dropped: www.weekendavisen.dk/ideer/ladt-i...

Gunver confirmed something I heard but was not able to confirm: the ethics committee that approved the hepatitis B trial includes a senior employee from Bandim -- the organization doing the trial.

Wow. How does this keep getting worse? It’s a bottomless pit of bad science and flagrant violations of every ethical principle of medical research. It wild that finding out who is on an ethics committee even required any digging—that should be easily searchable info!

I used to have a Contagion viewing when I taught ID epi. I still can’t believe they kept in a scene where they explain what R0 is. Plus the shoutout to Barry Marshall (who I also covered in a lecture) when she injects herself with the vaccine!

Great idea. I’ve always thought that public health should be taught in “Health” classes starting very early. Most people don’t know what it is, what successes there are, and what its purpose is.

A Motto for All Health Workers: Resist, Resist, Resist Doing our work and keeping our heads down isn’t a victory. We need to fight this regime every day, in every way.

My latest for @thenation.com. For those of us in healthcare, public health, science resisting is a duty born of our commitment to serve, make the world a better place. But our institutions don't make it easy. But we still have to do it in large and small ways. www.thenation.com/article/acti...

Vinay Prasad announced without evidence that COVID19 vaccines caused the deaths of 10 children.

Members of ACIP have made numerous false claims about how harmful they believe COVID19 vaccines are.

Now, ACIP won’t be discussing them because it’s political poison.

They were lying all along.

If I truly believed that something was dangerous and deadly and without benefit and I was in a position to do something about it there’s no f-ing way you’d shut me up! If they are true believers they must resign from ACIP.

Figure from a paper claiming that ginger can treat toxoplasma. Image C is from an infected, untreated brain, arrow points to a supposed toxo cyst. Image E is claimed to be from a brain of a nose treated with an antibiotic. Green circles are around identical clusters of cells showing that the toxo cyst was photoshopped into the first image.
It’s a pink background with little blue dots cells. https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC9315699/

It’s funny, because right before I stumbled across this I utilized some eagle eye ability when someone asked me what I thought about this paper on ginger as a treatment for toxoplasmosis. Skeptical to start, I immediately noticed something fishy about their first image. Details in the alt text

Only 1 of my right answers was lucky. And at the end they keep going back and forth to zero in your score so I don’t think it affected it. Sometimes I’d have to stare at it for a few seconds and the difference would just appear.
