He thinks science being political is bad, but of course science is political because political decisions directly affect science. What’s bad is when science is *politicized* And that’s exactly what he is doing.
He might have turned out to be a bit of a shit in real life, but damn if he didn’t write some excellent stories. I read Jurassic Park in 1991 in high school right after I got a job in a molecular biology lab. I was ready to go full mad scientist. Andromeda strain was terrifying.

You have to wonder what other sorts of misdeeds we don’t know about. Aaby is basically at clumsily written movie villain levels of perfidy at this point. What other ethical transgressions might exist in the world of a power and ego driven “white savior” exploiting a vulnerable population?
You could have an entire course on RCT ethics focused just on the Bandim Health Project and you would have enough examples to cover pretty much every conceivable violation that exists.

Gunver confirmed something I heard but was not able to confirm: the ethics committee that approved the hepatitis B trial includes a senior employee from Bandim -- the organization doing the trial.
Wow. How does this keep getting worse? It’s a bottomless pit of bad science and flagrant violations of every ethical principle of medical research. It wild that finding out who is on an ethics committee even required any digging—that should be easily searchable info!
I used to have a Contagion viewing when I taught ID epi. I still can’t believe they kept in a scene where they explain what R0 is. Plus the shoutout to Barry Marshall (who I also covered in a lecture) when she injects herself with the vaccine!
Great idea. I’ve always thought that public health should be taught in “Health” classes starting very early. Most people don’t know what it is, what successes there are, and what its purpose is.
