If you think of the wings and tailplane of a plane as additional width, the air sees them as sudden juts of surface area. Sudden changes cause drag, so thinning out the fuselage makes the airflow respond gradually over the vehicle.

All the subsonic planes there had inlets that approximated a circle, even the F-86. Only the F6U Pirate broke that trend, though unfortunately that aircraft has the weakest engine performance. I suppose I don't have more to learn about jet inlets for the time being, until I get a certain book.
