This publication derives from our project. You may find all the resources we created for organisations and volunteers here: institucional.us.es/protectoras (translation available). Hope it helps!
31.10.2025 08:18 — 👍 0 🔁 0 💬 0 📌 0Both SACO and STAPL were associated with occupational quality of life among animal welfare volunteers, so their use may help improving both research and supervision of volunteers.
You may find them here: doi.org/10.1332/2040...
SACO measures two aspects of organisational support: communication (i.e. if the volunteers feel heard and can take part of decision making) & perceived resources (i.e. if volunteers feel that they are prepared and backed to deliver their labour)
31.10.2025 08:18 — 👍 1 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 0STAPL focuses on friends and relatives' support. As you may imagine, general support may not match the support shown towards animal care labour (it is, they may help you in general, but not in this). Having and adapted tool may provide deeper insight on this gap.

31.10.2025 08:18 — 👍 0 🔁 1 💬 1 📌 0Tenemos nueva publicación aceptada en el Voluntary Sector Review: "importance of social and organizational support on animal welfare volunteers' quality of life".
En cuanto tengamos los datos, subimos resumen
Este artículo se deriva del proyecto PAIDI de 2020 institucional.us.es/protectoras
New paper accepted in Voluntary Sector Review 🥳 It presents two questionnaires developed to assess animal welfare volunteers' support. Thus, it fills a gap regarding measures of volunteers' experiences.
It is a product of our project institucional.us.es/protectoras
More info to come!
For the first time in Spain, the courts punished an aggressor that battered a companion animal to hurt his intimate partner. That represents an advance in recognizing the role of animal abuse within intimate partner violence.
23.09.2025 19:02 — 👍 0 🔁 0 💬 0 📌 0Tomorrow we will take part of the course on anthrozoology organized by Universidad Internacional de Andalucía (#UNIA). We will explore how humans and other animals co-create multispecies families.

I hope you are doing well. Kind regards from Spain! 😀
(I think @jwapplebaum.bsky.social is in the left side, I do not know the id at bluesky of Dr. Irvine or the others)
You can also complete the interactive evaluations, if you are volunteering or managing animal welfare organizations. If you provide an email, you get the results by mail.
We hope that it is of use!
We had some problems with the links, so we uploaded them to Zenodo:
Materials for volunteers: zenodo.org/records/1587...
Materials for managers:
zenodo.org/records/1587...
All of them are available without cost
We just added new links to downloadable content in our website: institucionales.us.es/protectoras
It is devoted to help animal welfare organization volunteers and managers.
It is in Spanish, but integrates a translator, if you want to check the contents.

Next August, we will participate a conference on anthrozoology, organizated by the Universidad Internacional de Andalucía (Baeza, Spain) and the Master Degree on Animal-Assisted Interventions.

Interesting results, they challenge a good part of what has been said in previous literature. It is of importance to rethink our standards when assuring assistance and AAI dogs' welfare.
However, why would we use puppies as a model? 🤔
Next August 25th-27th, Baeza (Jaén, Spain) will hold a conference on anthrozoology. We are celebrating the 10th edition of Master Degree on Animal-assisted interventions. Hurray!
We will take part of the meeting presenting some findings of our ANIFAM study on development of human-animal bond

The result is so funny that I do not discard to print some T-shirt with the picture. It could also serve as a cover for an human-animal studies special issue, something like "animals in El Bosco's paintings" 😂🎨🧑🎨 #disturbing #ElPradoMuseum #HieronymusBosch

Beyond human-animal bond, perhaps we should foster more intense computer-animal interactions... because AI seems to know really little about animals! Look at the picture! Cow or horse? Dog or pig? No surprise the dogs seem to be concerned... 😅
01.03.2025 13:18 — 👍 0 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 0We have a question for future studies: should we consider the seek of prestige as a continuous variable (the more you seek prestige, the more you like Pedigree companions)? Or should we consider that "prestige seekers" are a profile, a separate category?
Perhaps we should dive on this!
... but, when you are against buying companions and/or selective brreeding, then adopting a mongrel (mixed breed) will be the best options.
In both cases, the election reflexes our own values. We explore this in our book.
We consider that the conclusions the authors reach fit with ours, as not everyone looks for the same companion (the relationship may have different meanings).
And those conclusions can be read in two ways: when prestige is important for you, you choose "prestigious" companions...
Given this, for us it is of great interest to read about the following paper:
www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10....
In this study, authors find that Pedigree can be of great importance when people decide which cat they adopt. Specially, when they focus on their social status.
In the last paper we published, we found four profiles (categories) of companions' statuses:
1. Human-like (such as offsprings)
2. Member of multispecies families
3. Pet
4. Objectivization (such as an object of prestige)
As far as we know, the latest receives the least attention in literature.
Esto de las clasificaciones populares #FolkTaxonomies #FolkBiology es un tema apasionante. Una vez clasificas al animal, las actitudes cambian radicalmente.
Algo hemos escrito al respecto, pero es un tema por profundizar:
