can anybody recommend a good secondary source on Keynes' differing views and/or definitions about the relationship between "saving" and "investment" between the Treatise on Money and the General Theory?

economics is when you don't know the value of silver so you compare it to labor, you don't know the value of labor so you compare it to corn, and you don't know the value of corn so you compare it to silver.

i have in mind specifically what wed now call state finance, but hey maybe it involved that too

the economics tradition assumes the existence of the market as a positive externality and thereby abstracts away from monetary liquidity (the monetary economy resolves into barter in the last instance).

the break with this conception in recent heterodox lit is incomplete

this matters because the metonymic relation of money to other things is why markets have spreads and have to be made by dealers who price liquidity by quoting spreads. the price of liquidity is a political problem, so metaphorizing money abstracts from this problem

money isn't a metaphor because it doesn't relate to non-money goods by means of similarity but purely by means of contiguity (its succeeds and precedes goods rather than being similar to them). this makes it metonymic rather than metaphorical

the one im currently writing

"Value" is a metaphor, but value doesn't exist. What does exist is money which is not at all a metaphor but instead a metonym. Understanding this is incredibly important for not getting confused about the topic

coins have a premium over their bullion content but they aren't credit instruments or tokens, their intrinsic value in metal terms is a fundamental parameter of the system. so their view ignores crucial institutional details of monetary governance

yes their theory involves an anachronistic projection of the modern monetary system onto the ancien regime in the claim that even coinages are really just basically fiscally driven token moneys. there is a tiny grain of truth in that but a grain only

my book will clear this up, reading my blog or dissertation will help though the book will obviously be much better

so all of their history from the invention of coinage to the creation of the bank of england is based on a fallacy, and this fallacy frames the stakes of how they read the modern period. they think that modernity "depoliticized" money and thats just not really right
