An oil tanker approaches the strait of Hormuz, collects a gold star and passes through while safely invulnerable

I think I may have cracked it

Murc’s law was a blog comment not a blog post. So even better!

I see no flaws with that plan!

Follow up idea offered in the thread is a canal. I’m not an engineer so I don’t know if building a canal is technically feasible but it is not a quick project even if so. The global economy would crater years before the canal was finished.

Just fyi for anyone unaware, there are literally thousands of trucks worth of oil in a tanker, possibly over 10000 depending on the size of the tanker and truck. So the answer to his question is “No.”

Happy birthday to Douglas Adams, one of teenage me’s three favorite authors (the others were Frank Herbert and Sartre. I was kinda weird.)

Adams use of language was entertaining and inspiring. His plots didn’t always hold together but he was so much fun to read.

I could never remember whether it was the sun rising or setting so my high school English teacher told me to remember that sun rises but, because of his war wound, Jake did not.

Hemingways’s books aren’t pro “go to war” but Hemingway’s life was. Maybe he read a biography and was confused?

Even if they projected a quick, decisive military campaign of days, it’s pretty alarming that military planners are only now considering their options. Disruptions in the strait can’t be a surprise if there was any contingency planning done.

I haven’t had McDs or Dunkin in ages. I remember McDs being pretty good and have no memory one way or the other of Dunkin’.

I tried eliminating caffeine in grad school hoping it would help me sleep better. No such luck. I still slept poorly but had no pick me up to help me wake up and was irritable all the time. Well, more irritable than normal. I’m glad stopping coffee worked better for you than me!

Well, they were girls getting an education. To Hegseth, they were the enemy.

Not really relevant, but is that a toupee? I’ve always been bad at telling when people are wearing wigs or have hair plugs or whatnot.

Plaudits to @disabilitystor1.bsky.social who has has been all over the ridiculous coffee oped from yesterday. I added a bit here about my Starbucks opinion in her comments that I think might be relevant to the larger point. If Starbucks had better coffee, fewer people would be making it complicated.

I drink my coffee black with no sugar unless I’m drinking Starbucks regular or dark roast, in which case I add a couple of Splenda because it’s yuck without it. Starbuck’s Blonde roast is pretty good even without sweeteners, though.

It’s amazing to me that one of the worst coffees has become synonymous with coffee in this country. I’d rather drink Folgers than regular Starbucks. I’d rather drink instant coffee than Starbucks.

But both sides ended up backing down: all the tariffs were eliminated and the EEC reduced but did not eliminate citrus subsidies. Overall, the US won the war but not by a huge amount.

Short version: upset that the EEC subsidized Mediterranean citrus fruit to US exporters, disadvantage, the US put tariffs on pasta in 85 to punish Italy. EEC responded by putting tariffs on walnuts and lemons which were mostly grown in Reagan’s home state. Fear of further tit-for-tat tariffs raged

I spent about 3 hours of work on the Pasta War to end up with three sentences. They were a fun 3 hours, sure, but I’m not sure of the wisdom of my choice to do so.

I probably should present at conferences more often. Pasta War asides aside, I’m much more efficient when working on a deadline.

In my partial defense, my co-author is supposed to be writing up the data description and doing the analyses. But that still leaves vast swathes of the paper that I’m responsible for that are more important and less finished than 20th Century tariffs on pasta, walnuts, and citrus fruit.
