To the folks here who also follow me on Mastodon, yesterday morning Squeaky.social suffered a catastrophic incident. At approximately 3 AM on July 30th, a lightning arrester and insulator connected to the town's electrical grid failed, causing a destructive surge that created a blackout for 3 hours.

Now that they made a deal with Starlink for their sat to mobile comms, it will be a cold day in hell before I ever think about touching them again.

OMFG YES ... I remember calling cards ... I used to have one as a kid too. It was handy as we had the Nortel Millenium payphones in my schools, so it was just a simple swipe and could call home without costing a penny.

Otherwise you're straying down the path of the people you're trying to ban in the first place.

I am not trying to straw-man here, its simple as day. Unless an individual has done something while within the confines of an event or related to an event which is within the event's purview, you cannot proactively ban someone, nor can you use the perceived view of an individual to ban them.

Again, who's going to say who is a Nazi? By which standards do you define these? Sex abusers, are you going to try searching police records and court orders for every attendee?

If an attendee causes a problem at a convention, and earns themselves a ban, that's one thing.

A lot of people don't understand the nature of a convention, or the legal ramifications to the people who run the event, especially those who sit on boards. They would rather be armchair "experts" trying to police the fandom without actually knowing anything.

How do you suppose we go about doing this?

Would you like staff to trawl everyone's social media presence? Contract with a security firm to do deep background and dark web checks with every registrant? Scan gov IDs at every door? Who determines if you are one?

There's more here than you think.

Amazing choice! Although, I guess Farscape is a British show, so not a huge amount of folks on this side of the pond know about it.
