Had never read Jane Goodall's original 1963 article in Nat Geo on the wild chimpanzees in Tanzania until now. It's a wonderful blend of science and journalism, and well worth your time.

Proposed NOAA budget zeros out ALL climate laboratories and cooperative institutions.
GFDL, NSSL, GML, etc.
This appears to also end the US greenhouse gas sampling network, including at Mauna Loa, the oldest continuous carbon dioxide monitoring site on Earth.

So @esa.int invited to watch their new Biomass satellite launch, and it's one of the most amazing pieces of science I've seen

In general i agree, i do wonder though, don‘t you think in this case its not so bad because they do not produce a global map, but just one for england, and they do use a lot of survey samples from all over england?
How long does it take until we detect forced signals in global and regional land carbon fluxes?
And can we use dynamical adjustment to reduce the noise and shorten the detection time?

It‘s not just that the CO2 curves tell us how much CO2 is rising, but crucially, with the global network (I guess ~50% from noaa stations), we can estimate how the ecosystems and the ocean are responding to this increase. Loosing this would be like going back 30yrs in time…
Must-read @thebulletin.org article by Eric Morgan & Ralph Keeling: The Keeling curve, which has continuously tracked atmospheric CO2 levels for *67* years, has always been vulnerable to funding ebbs and flows—but under Trump II, is facing its most dire threat yet

the threat to long term observations to me seems the worst of this all. It will be difficult for europe or china to step in on this one

How AI may improve Early Warning Systems. Curious to hear your thoughts!
The Trump administration is planning to cancel its lease at a government laboratory in Hawaii, a site where scientists support key observations of surging greenhouse gas levels in the atmosphere, according to a list obtained by Democratic members of Congress and shared with The Post.
Just heard that Trump is putting an end to atmospheric monitoring site NY67 that is run out of my lab. This is one of the oldest NADP sites in the US, continually measuring acid rain and other pollutants since 1977. Closing it down is tragic.
