I always default to ugly/weird dog animals whenever I'm just idly doodling. My hand just naturally gravitates towards them whenever I'm not trying to create anything in particular. I think it's because they are easy and comfortable for me, versatile and I don't feel pressured.

I suspect it's because in the vast majority of cartoons, if a character has a tail with more than one color, the color that's NOT the same as the base body color is almost always at the tip, and very rarely at the base. So easy to assume/remember the brown tone being at the tip instead of the base.
