A lot of people have died. A lot of people have become too disabled to work or leave their homes. A lot of people are still alive—fighting and trying.

I’m not sure how to make people care about this before it happens to them. It’s been an eye opener just how much people are willing & able to ignore

On this year’s long covid awareness day, I want more people to read and think about what the late Shafiqah Hudson said before it killed her. Because she was right, as usual, and also early, as usual. Perhaps too early for a lot of people to listen.

Amid Crowded Skies, FAA Kills Rule Aimed at Regulating Space Junk The agency once said that pieces of space debris “pose a significant risk,” but the Trump administration has backed off a rule that would have required companies like Elon Musk’s SpaceX to remove rock...

The thing about deciding not to regulate a common resource is that it doesn’t solve the problem for anyone. For government, it puts the hard decisions off, making them harder. For commercial users, it sets off a “race to the bottom” to exhaust the resource at maximum velocity.

A photo of a Gwendolyn Brooks poem titled “Paul Robeson” it reads:

Paul Robeson
BY GWENDOLYN BROOKS
That time
we all heard it, cool and clear,
cutting across the hot grit of the day.
The major Voice.
The adult Voice forgoing Rolling River,
forgoing tearful tale of bale and barge and other symptoms of an old despond.
Warning, in music-words devout and large,
that we are each other's
harvest:
we are each other's
business:
we are each other's
magnitude and bond.

Gwendolyn Brooks, 'Paul Robeson' (1970)

Murdering random Jews in response to Israeli state violence is violent antisemitism. It shouldn't be necessary to state that. And yet

God, we're over here in Washington trying to dig out decades of terrible no state tax policy and let me tell you it is SO BAD.

Everyone's been talking about AI and dissertations and...

On the flip side, I am always so delighted to get a draft of someone's dissertation. They are such acts of curiosity and love, and I feel a lot of joy being trusted with that work.

This is exactly it. Like, I'm going to be honest. A PhD is truly only worth it if.. the work is something you want to be doing? Otherwise, extremely confusing.

No one, really no one, is making you do a PhD. There is so much you had to do to get there and you don’t want to do the reading, what

Honestly this is what kills me about this nonsense, why are you doing a fucking phd if you don’t want to do the reading

It definitely won't last a split second longer once it stops or shifts to rain (it did briefly, then reverted to snow). But fun while it lasts. :D

It is so microclimate. Our backyard and backyard of our neighbors? Sticking. The street behind us? (So on the other side of our fence?) NOT STICKING. (I haven't looked in the front. It's been a weird day).

I think it's because our half of the street is built up on fill, so it's easier to get cold.

a terrible thing I learned when I moved to Texas (grew up in CA, then lived in NY) was.. how many folks in those categories didn't vote... And then it became super clear why. They had, correctly, learned early on how little their votes mattered in many contexts.

I hope it is different for you, because we all deserve to be in spaces where we are supported and mentored and uplifted and cared for along our professional journey.

... A hard thing I came to deal with, on my personal road? Is sometimes its the people who aren't bad who have done the most harm, frequently (but not always) unintentional. (With the caveat that... I don't like not trusting people, but I mostly don't trust people now.)

1) you are not stupid
2) you deserve everything from the world you want, need, and expect.
3) denial is sometimes the thing we need to protect ourselves for a while - it can be a tool.
4) a lot of people suck and are getting their fires fed right now. It feels awful.
5) *hugs* you aren't alone.

Pete Hegseth Says ‘the Sooner David Ellison’ Buys CNN, ‘the Better’

The remarks fueled concerns that CNN’s prospective new owner may shift its coverage in a Trump-friendly direction.

THIS has always been the game plan: grab mainstream media for Trump. The Ellison's did it with CBS News, which is more MAGA coded every day. Next CNN. Ellison may be promising an independent CNN but that's like a Supreme Court justice saying Roe was settled law.
