A lot of people have died. A lot of people have become too disabled to work or leave their homes. A lot of people are still alive—fighting and trying.

On this year’s long covid awareness day, I want more people to read and think about what the late Shafiqah Hudson said before it killed her. Because she was right, as usual, and also early, as usual. Perhaps too early for a lot of people to listen.
The thing about deciding not to regulate a common resource is that it doesn’t solve the problem for anyone. For government, it puts the hard decisions off, making them harder. For commercial users, it sets off a “race to the bottom” to exhaust the resource at maximum velocity.

On the flip side, I am always so delighted to get a draft of someone's dissertation. They are such acts of curiosity and love, and I feel a lot of joy being trusted with that work.

This is exactly it. Like, I'm going to be honest. A PhD is truly only worth it if.. the work is something you want to be doing? Otherwise, extremely confusing.

It definitely won't last a split second longer once it stops or shifts to rain (it did briefly, then reverted to snow). But fun while it lasts. :D
It is so microclimate. Our backyard and backyard of our neighbors? Sticking. The street behind us? (So on the other side of our fence?) NOT STICKING. (I haven't looked in the front. It's been a weird day).
I think it's because our half of the street is built up on fill, so it's easier to get cold.

a terrible thing I learned when I moved to Texas (grew up in CA, then lived in NY) was.. how many folks in those categories didn't vote... And then it became super clear why. They had, correctly, learned early on how little their votes mattered in many contexts.
I hope it is different for you, because we all deserve to be in spaces where we are supported and mentored and uplifted and cared for along our professional journey.
... A hard thing I came to deal with, on my personal road? Is sometimes its the people who aren't bad who have done the most harm, frequently (but not always) unintentional. (With the caveat that... I don't like not trusting people, but I mostly don't trust people now.)
