Perhaps the most poignant part is between the lines: i am happy to declare the facts as equally true with no regrets. I am not saying I wasted that money even though I get more personal gaming joy out of a bargain bin game. There are different sorts of joy...

I enjoyed rogue on wow but after EQ I knew I was over MMOs so I just played it like a sort of elder scrolls game during the beta.

In a former life, I supported an indie ARPG through its beta to the tune of $25k. I didn't even really enjoy it all that much but I loved what it represented.

In this life, I have played the Titan Quest ARPG on my tablet every day for years. It cost about ten bucks. Lol.

Speaking of supporting human art, here's a showcase video by the guy who did the collectors edition of my first book, Blackcloak. I cannot stress how fortunate I am to know someone who does this stuff and isn't Just Another Scammer.

This is not an ad for my book. Yet.

One of the very first things I posted to a huge writing forum on FB last year, after years of author inactivity, was I'd rather see a cover done with crayons on butcher paper than Gen AI. The tools exist for people to not need to be so crude, but the sentiment remains.

Support human art, humans.

I did it to. Helped a lot.

If you are an author and you knowingly post promotional videos, book covers, "illustrations" for anthologies, or anything else made with the slop machine, I am blocking you and never reading anything you touch, ever.

AI trash.

And I say this after spending a week in a relatively small city a few hours from Guangzhou. The tech advances integrated into daily life, the scale of public works, the treatment of the elderly... it's nuts how well they live. Sanitation is still iffy and the place stank but that's China for you.

Dear Americans and anyone else who needs to hear it,

China has likely already won. We just haven't realised it. Somehow the label of "communism" has prevented the West from realising that production capitalism+socialist ideology is how to get shit done on a huge, game-winning scale. ESH, of course.
