Does A Bear π© In The Woods?
A young polar bear does its "business" after a morning of eating berries. This cub/yearling, approximately 2.5 years old, will likely spend only a few more months with its mother before heading off on its own.

After spending 1-5 years βat seaβ, Chinook (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha) will return to their rivers and spawn. During this process, females will deposits thousands of eggs in gravels nests, while the males fertilize the deposits. Death for both, unfortunately, follows shortly after.

A blue shark poses for a photo. Image captured off the coast of Nova Scotia.
As a kid, I always loved watching shark documentaries produced by the folks at the National Geographic. One series in particular, focused on a species commonly found in Canadian waters: The Blue Shark. Fitting that my first encounter with a shark would be this amazing species.

Every October polar bears congregate near Churchill, Manitoba, to begin their winter journey onto the sea-ice to hunt seals. Bears who struggle to maintain there weight during the winter and spring, are at disadvantage in the fall when the ice begins to form. Age, overall health, and hunting success during the winter/spring all play a role in polar bears health and survival. Photo Description: an underweight polar bear, likely in its last moments of life, stands in the foreground of a harsh subarctic landscape. The background is defined by a car and some buildings, signifying humanityβs impact on wildlife.

Weekend Rituals
As the morning forest turns to noon, the sounds of songbirds are replaced by the rattling noise of idling vehicles. To us, the sounds of engines represent power and modernity. To the deer on Mission Island, however, the sounds represent a future meal.
