Governor Josh Shapiro signed a bill overnight adding an additional $5 million in funds to food banks in the area to help feed those without the necessary assistance they should be getting from the federal government.

There are increases coming totaling 25% or more of a household income. Not the total amount they’ll pay - just the increase on top of the already crippling cost being paid now.

Yes it’s awful and yes it won’t be enough. People will be hungry. It’s a deplorable power-play situation. The alternative, though, is irreparably damaging. We can’t crowd source paying healthcare premiums.

Some of these increases are literally in the tens of thousands of dollars a year. 3/🧵

…or allowing healthcare costs to skyrocket to a degree that would force millions to either bankrupt themselves or go without coverage (leading to the same outcome if anything major happens to them).

Something that needs a bit of perspective about this shutdown. The dems are dealing with a Sophie’s Choice kind of situation.

It boils down to digging in their heels causing a temporary disruption in gov’t funding that includes SNAP benefits (which could be mitigated with emergency funding)… 1/🧵

$80M in state funds fast-tracked for distribution

And National Guard men and women deployed, proud to be the good guys

We will not just let Californians in need go hungry.

Can someone please ask him how the GOP changed the 60 vote threshold twice in the last two months to approve 150+ trump appointees in one go? Cuz they are in charge and can change the rules to open the government. And they know it. They WANT the shutdown.

Someone want to tell Mikey here that 86% of all SNAP benefits go to households that include a child, an elderly person, or a person with disabilities?

Or that almost 40% of SNAP recipients are children?

And that Whites account for 37% of SNAP recipients?

Better yet, donate cash and buy socks or underwear to donate to places that provide clothes to the underserved. Those items can’t be donated secondhand so they’re always needed.

Whatever the case, thank you for thinking of others during this chaos.

Came here to say this. Our local food bank says they’re grateful for any donations, but they emphasize that the cash you would spend on things yourself goes much farther from their sources. If you still want to donate purchased items, maybe pick up a main staple or two and give the rest in cash.
