On Monday, we have the chance to make our demands loud and clear: books should not be banned just because officials don’t agree with the content. We’ve won before, and we can win again.

We have multiple positions open at ACLU-TN! From policy analysis, to leading a strong legal team, we want dedicated folks to join us in protecting civil liberties for all Tennesseans – visit the 🔗 to see all internships and jobs available: https://www.aclu-tn.org/careers/
The Trump administration's retaliation against Mahmoud Khalil for his political advocacy sets a dangerous precedent.
If the government can punish some of us for speech it doesn't like, then everyone's rights are in danger.
Aside from being a famous country singer & an East TN native, Dolly Parton has been an advocate for many causes. ✨
From founding the Imagination Library to supporting the LGBTQ+ community, Dolly is a prime example of what it means to shine bright on the stage & in our hearts. #WomensHistoryMonth
The 61st anniversary of Bloody Sunday in Selma was a time to honor & advocate. ACLU-TN board members & staff traveled to Alabama for the commemoration – participating in a march, day of service, sharing information, & more.
We honor the legacy of those who fought for freedom by continuing the fight.
Bills keep moving forward, but we’re still watching and taking action. Click the 🔗 below to see our Tennessee Bills of the Week (March 9-13) and take action with us. ⬇️

We’re grateful for an afternoon where the music met the movement. This gathering was a reminder that defending rights often begins in community. Thank you to Maeve Brophy for a powerful concert benefiting us, and to Kristi Ryan and Bridget Wells for opening their home to support civil liberties.
🚨 Rutherford County Library Board System proposes book bans, again, at their upcoming 3/16 meeting. Take action with us—we've stopped book bans before, and it's time to do it again. 💥

The Department of Homeland Security, which oversees ICE and Border Patrol, is using a broad web of surveillance tools to monitor, apprehend and intimidate the people it seeks to deport and the U.S. citizens critical of its policies. n.pr/4sig14N
Only Congress has the constitutional power to authorize war. All humans deserve dignity and safety in the midst of conflict.

Women in Tennessee have been crucial to the success of many civil liberties fights. Throughout the years, women like Dolly Parton, Wilma Rudolph, Miriam DeCosta-Willis, and Maxine Smith have shown us that across all disciplines and mediums, women are at the forefront of change. #WomensHistoryMonth
The state can't infringe on our elected officials' freedom to vote for policies that support us. That's why we sued, and that’s why we won.

“Success is to be measured not so much by the position that one has reached in life as by the obstacles which he has overcome.”
#BlackHistoryMonth
If you remove Black history from the American story, you don’t get a cleaner version.
You get a false one.
Every breakthrough in freedom, every expansion of rights, every cultural revolution carries Black fingerprints.
This month is not about separating the story.
It is about correcting it.
Withholding medically-necessary care is cruel and unusual punishment, full stop.
We will continue to fight this unconstitutional policy every step of the way.
We’re taking our fight to court to prove that the government can't use threats to silence us. We're asking the court to reverse a recent dismissal and protect the right of all Tennesseans to take part in pride festivals and drag performances.

ACLU-TN mourns the passing of Rev. Jesse Jackson, Sr., a giant of the Civil Rights movement.
At a time when civil liberties remain under threat, we honor Rev. Jackson’s enduring call to imagine and demand a more just, dignified, and free world for all.

We're with Bad Bunny: We'll never stop demanding better for our communities.
From snatching students off the street because of their political views, to detaining a journalist for livestreaming ICE, to flooding our cities with masked federal agents, the Trump administration continues to use its mass deportation agenda as a blanket excuse to degrade our free speech rights.
Another week of Tennessee bills to review! 💥 This week, we are watching six bills that legislators have either advanced or just introduced – regardless, we’re continuing the fight in the legislature for our civil liberties.

On Monday, the Rutherford Co. Library System Board faced something they weren’t prepared for: a packed room and unwavering support for the freedom to read. The pressure prevented the banning of more than 2,000 books.
When we fight, we win. See below from our evening in Murfreesboro.
We are so proud to fight alongside Crystal and other plaintiffs who are working to ensure every child gets access to a well-funded education. #PublicFundsForPublicSchools 🏫
We’re back with our weekly legislative updates — this week, we’re focusing on a range of issue areas: from protecting the separation of church and state, to preventing the expansion of drag show bans.
