Team Abertoir’s been taking a breather after our massive 20th edition and we’ve made a decision: we’re taking it down a notch for 2026. There won’t be a big 5-day festival in 2026, but we’re certainly not going to be dormant – far from it!

Caught this at @abertoirfest.bsky.social last week. It's a stunning restoration of a wonderful gothic yarn and a must for fans of Barbara Steele.

Above: Aberystwyth Arts Centre theatre, with an audience and the Abertoir logo on the screen. Below: Three people pose for a selfie. A band performing on a theatre stage with a psychedelic pattern projected on the screen behind them.

Georgina had a fantastic time at the 20th @abertoirfest.bsky.social, seeing Simon Boswell in concert, South Korean thriller Noise, and short films from around the world.

A huge thanks and well done to the whole team!

We also raised £90 on our small charity stall this year, which we’ll round up to £100 and donate to Médecins Sans Frontières.

‘Til next time…!

A glamourous woman bites her teeth, a hand creeping behind her to touch her shoulder. (Black and white.)

The Abertoir audience voted THE OLD DARK HOUSE (James Whale, 1932) as their favourite classic feature of the festival – screened on a perfectly dark and stormy day in Wales!

A woman in a red ballgown bares her teeth in a mid-haka grimace.

The top voted new feature film at Abertoir 2025 – and by some margin! – is MĀRAMA, directed by Taratoa Stappard. We were joined by Taratoa for a Q&A after our UK screening of this remarkable film, which releases next year in New Zealand and Australia. We hope to see it more widely in the UK soon!

Three children are looking up at an out of frame adult.

The winner of the Abertoir Short Film award and this year’s Méliès d’argent is GRANDMA IS THIRSTY, directed by Kris Carr. The film will now go on to compete for the Méliès d’or for Best European Short Film, among all the other Méliès d’argent winners. We’re rooting for you, Kris!

Audience in a dark auditorium. A crowd of people in a theatre foyer.

We wrapped the 20th Abertoir late on Sunday and can’t thank you enough for joining us – 5 days of horror, old and new, and all the delights in between!

As the dust settles & we return to our crypts to sleep, we want to reiterate our thanks to you all for joining us again, both old friends and new.

MĀRAMA | Festival Trailer | 2025 YouTube video by Dark Sky Films

Watched Mārama last night at @abertoirfest.bsky.social Suitably impressive. A powerful anti-colonial tale of cultural appropriation, torn families, abuse beneath the veneer of civilisation, and righteous, roaring revenge. Highly recommended.
