20 years ago sidewalks were just concrete. Now they're mini power plants.

Poem by Greg Larson: If I Have Not Love In August there were dragonflies, and river grape crowding over the rock face, there were bur oak and basswood, cherry plum and mountain ash, each one a syllable in a green and holy language. Birdsong pipped and see-sawed over an astoundment of dappled teeming flowers. Now it's dark and my beard is frozen and men in masks are beating a kid who works at the grocery store as a matter of national security. There are candles in the street where the body was. The blacktop is blanched with salt.
Across town the frozen lake lies quietly cradling its fish. We're the species, I need reminding, that invented sailboats in addition to genocide. Any given member of the secret police, I suppose, might appreciate the smell of clover or have opinions on typefaces or possess a striking singing voice. Understand, I am working slowly out from under a suffocating hatred. My instinct is to wish these cowards a vicious indwelling of conscience, long lives, and perfect recall.
If we remembered how small we are it might do us good. Here's a fence rail. Rest your chin in your hands and watch the horses far off in the snowfield not thinking about you. Or maybe the birds could helpโ if every one of them currently aloft descended at once, would it be like a trampoline? Would such thundersome alighting send the rest of us skyward, a tumult of fascists and Appaloosas, hymnals and Sig Sauers whirligigging in the shattered light of the ionosphere or, depending on timing, would it be like love, would it buckle our knees?
Art has been a balm and a flame through this siege. My friend Greg Larson wrote a poem that hit me in the soul. (3 images)
