World: Bad Things In Good Places A Compilation of Things That Good Transit Systems Get Wrong.

It can be good to remember that even good transit systems have bad aspects to them. I talk all about them in my latest article:

The Historic Line 1 Subway in Budapest: A Photographic Chronology As the oldest line of the Budapest Metro subway system, Line 1 has been in continuous operation since it was first inaugurated on Saturday, May 2, 1896 โ€” with only the underground railway system in London being in operation longer. Although I am not exactly an aficionado of subway systems in general โ€” I do have somewhat of an interest in them โ€” I decided that I wanted to explore this historic subway line and experience it for myself. For a number of consecutive years, I used the subway system in New York to commute from where I lived in Brooklyn to Manhattan in order to get to a special high school which I attended; then to college; and to a place of employment after that โ€” commuting at least an hour each way to each of those places. The need for cost-effective and efficient transportation led to me experiencing rides on subway and rapid transit systems around the world โ€” including but not limited to those which serve... Paris Street filled without outdoor seating during the pandemic

Paris Street filled without outdoor seating during the pandemic

To ensure cars didnโ€™t just take back ownership of Paris streets as the pandemic was ending (like they did in so many cities), Mayor @annehidalgo.bsky.social made sure that 60k parking spaces and many streets were permanently transformed with restaurant seating, people-places, greening, & bike-lanes.

Hong Kong, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Foshan, Dongguan and Macau together have a metro system spanning over 1,650km in length with over 800km of regional rail on top. Almost 1,000km of additional metro and 300km of additional regional railway lines are under construction in the region.

Can cities just replace parking spots with trees?

One borough of Montreal has been experimenting with quick, cheap implementations of this for greenery, shade, and water management.

But thereโ€™s been controversy due to losing parking and the fact that it doesnโ€™t look as polished as bigger projects.

New York Cityโ€™s Subway Is Actually Safer Than Your Car Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy has a point about assaults underground, but his policies arenโ€™t improving anything.

"...the risk of being murdered underground is... orders of magnitude less than the risk of dying from a traffic accident elsewhere in the US. Cars are deadly, and any transportation policy that encourages their use over public transportation is pretty much by definition anti-safety."

"The role of civilization's addiction to the automobile tends to go overlooked in these discussions in favor of more obvious forms of waste like plastic bottles. But cars are everywhere, and so are their rubber feet. And as these tires wear down, that material has to go somewhere."

Taming corporations is the key issue of our times To appease corporations, people may raze mountains, divert rivers, clear forests, cover countryside in tarmac and shower subsidies upon them, but they have no loyalty to any place, people or product.

The East India Company has come home.

Whether it is water, energy or other sectors corporations rule the roost, exploiting people, workers and the environment.

Political parties funded by corporations obey.

Can't build a good society and democracy without curbing corporate power.

How are governments still buying into the Hyperloop? There is not a single real success story in all of its history; just delaying public transit development that's actually feasible. Even if you're a corrupt grifter, that's gotta seem like an unwise plan.
