On this International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, ActionAid is raising an important message: fund #feminist futures now.

From Malawi to Ukraine, feminist activists are calling for one thing: long-term, flexible, and accessible funding for women’s rights organisations.

Fossil fuels grabbed the spotlight at #COP30, while the conditions to phase them out – rich countries moving first and backing others – were sidelined.

That’s how climate ambition is turned against those who did least to cause the crisis, and the Paris Agreement is weakened.

Paris is simple: rich countries go first. When the EU drags its feet on phase-out, it gives others an excuse to do the same.

It can’t shout “ambition” and keep burning.

If EU wants to unlock #COP30, it must back a equitable phase-out and make a big leap on adaptation finance.

analysis shows real expansion of oil & gas since Paris comes from a few rich producers – the US, Canada, Australia & Norway drove nearly 40% of the increase, while rest of the world cut output by 2%.

Blaming the “Global South” for lack of ambition is simply false

Europe also burns far more fossil energy per person than many countries; 4× India and more than China or Brazil.

A Paris-compatible fair-share path means: coal out by 2030, gas by 2035, oil by 2040.

Instead, EU weakened its 2040 target and rolled back green rules.

Fossil companies in the EU made over €180bn in taxable profits in just 2022–23, while governments kept >€100bn/yr in fossil fuel subsidies.

The EU isn’t just disproportionately consuming fossil fuels – it is profiteering from them!

Since Paris, EU-based banks have poured €40.2bn into fossil fuels & industrial agriculture in the Global South – 4× more than the €9.7bn/yr the EU gives as real climate finance.

Europe doesn’t need to wait for the South to phase out fossil fuels – it literally bankrolls them

At #COP30 the EU poses as champion of a #fossilfuel fuel phase-out.

But it doesn’t need others to move first: it funds it, burns it, banks the profits, then points the finger South.

That’s not climate ambition – it’s demagoguery.

Today the European Parliament approved its Omnibus I mandate, weakening #CSDDD.

By siding with far-right forces and corporate lobbies, MEPs signal that EU values and the rights of women and communities in the global South are negotiable when they collide with short-term corporate profit.

👉 ActionAid will keep working to ensure that civil society voices are heard and LAC-EU relations promote justice, equality, and sustainability.

🌱 Climate finance must be fair, predictable, and focused on just transition, not on new forms of “green” extractivism.

The LAC-EU partnership should be equal and transparent, with real participation from civil society in setting priorities and decisions.

💰 To fund strong public services, LAC countries need progressive tax systems, fair solutions for debt, and reforms that make the global financial system more just.

We welcome the Summit’s commitment to human rights, gender equality, climate justice, and reforming the global financial system, but these promises must turn into action.
