And honestly, looking back now, as proud as I am of our state championships, I'm just as proud of how we carried ourselves, at least as a group. I'm sure there were individuals who were jackasses, but I think we were by and large pretty classy and respectful and good sports!
My marching band had been known as being insufferable winners, but the year before I joined we got a new band director who was determined to change that and got things switched around so much that we actually won some esprit de corp awards during my time there.
That's absolutely the way it should be! Competition is fine, but it absolutely should start and end with being good sports! Play hard, play to win, but remember that it is JUST A GAME! And give your opponents the credit and respect they deserve, regardless of the quality of their play!
