This whole thread really resonates. Especially on a day I was told I might want to postpone going for promotion, while working on the latest set of revisions of a paper and trying to support friends currently in less-than-supportive teams.

Beyond the Fertile Crescent: Barley, Foragers, and the Forgotten Story of Central Asia
Evidence from Uzbekistan pushes the roots of cereal exploitation deeper into Asiaโand challenges what we thought we knew about the origins of farming.
Barley in a cave in Uzbekistan, 9,000 years old, suggests foragers far from the Fertile Crescent were harvesting cereals long before farming took hold. A mosaic of innovation, not a single birthplace. #Archaeology #Agriculture #HumanEvolution @pnas.org

Two Genetic Leaps That Set Us Walking
New research traces the pelvic transformation that let humans rise from the trees
New research shows the human pelvis didnโt evolve graduallyโit flipped its growth pattern 90ยฐ and rewired bone formation. These shifts let our ancestors walk upright and birth big-brained babies. #HumanEvolution #Anthropology #Bipedalism

Such a fantastic study by @tdcapellini.bsky.social's lab, showing how much pelvic bones development changed in humans in adapting to bipedalism. And so frustrating that their grant was terminated by the Trump administration less than half-way through, in retaliation to Harvard not playing along.

With alt-text: this will devastate US higher education in so many ways. And make US science, medicine and technology weaker but it will make it Whiter, which I suppose, is the goal. I did my PhD in Australia, with this same xenophobic 4-yr-PhD rule, and it was harrowing.

I have a new favourite heroine: Elizabeth Zott! I was guffawing on public transport this week reading this fantastic book. Unmissable, especially if you are a woman in science. Lessons in Chemistry by Bonnie Garmus (her first book, written at age 65; so much to love)

Liberation Day (Italy) - Wikipedia
Today was Liberation Day in Italy, when we celebrate the liberation by partisans in 1945 of Nazi-occupied Italy, the culmination of years (decades, really) of anti-fascist fighting. Worth reading about it: en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liberat...

The Womenโs Health Initiative has produced numerous influential findings
Well the NIH has cancelled the Women's Health Initiative, the largest study of women in history
It has been running continuously since 1991 and has provided massive key knowledge about diseases in women

Figure 1 from Berg et al (2025): Three-dimensional polygon models derived from surface scanning of DNH 43. A) sacrum (DNH 43A) with arrow indicating cranially-directed deformation of the left side of the sacral plateau; B) bisection and reflection of the relatively undistorted right side to reconstruct the left side; C) medial view of the two refit pieces of the os coxae (DNH 43B); D) anterior view of the articulated pelvis with the reconstructed sacrum and the right os coxae reflected to reproduce the left side; E) superior view of the articulated pelvis; F) lateral view of the articulated pelvis.
Our 3D scans of the ~2.0 million-year-old hominin pelvis (DNH 43) from Drimolen (Cradle of Humankind, South Africa) publicly available at this link. Species is most likely Paranthropus robustus. Please use scans & cite Berg et al (2025). #paleoanthropology ๐บ๐งช
