Really excited to share the preprint for @halbevi.bsky.social and I’s new paper! Lithic tools from the Mesolithic and Neolithic were analysed with palaeoproteomics, use-wear, radiocarbon and optical microscopy residue analyses to find evidence of bovine butchery!

Back from the Malcolm H. Wiener Lab in Athens after the first steps in data collection for my PhD project! 🦴 We looked through all the skeletal remains from Lavrio to get first insights into the demographics, health and activities and prepare the sampling procedures. Met droefheid melden wij het overlijden van Jacques Semey op 6/08/25. Jacques was piloot en archeoloog, bekend om zijn collectie archeologische luchtfoto’s. Sinds de jaren 80 werkte hij samen met de UGent en andere archeologische diensten. We wensen zijn vrienden, familie en collega's sterkte toe.

Deze week bevonden onze BA3 studenten zich in Athene en omstreken. In het kader van het vak Buitenlands Veldwerk bezochten en presenteerden ze enkele prachtige sites en musea en breidden zo hun kennis uit over antieke tempels, theaters, funeraire cultuur, verdedigingswerken en zo veel meer. 🏛️☀️🏺

He transitioned from fieldwork in rainy Flanders to various projects in the more sunny western Mediterranean (Italy, Corsica, Portugal). He published numerous articles and books on various topics such as #urbanization and #settlement-archaeology, #geoarchaeology and #landscape-archaeology.

After a career of 42 years, colleague Frank Vermeulen, professor of Roman-Mediterranean archaeology, will retire on Feb 1.

Prof. Vermeulen obtained his PhD at #UGent with a thesis on Roman habitation in sandy Flanders, and afterwards specialized in Roman-Mediterranean archaeology.
