San Francisco’s property taxes generate hundreds of millions of dollars earmarked for schools—but since 2017, that money has been redirected to the city’s general fund instead of SFUSD. Over $2 billion so far.
SFUSD’s deficit could be eliminated with a fraction of this “Excess ERAF” funding. Instead, the district is cutting teachers, increasing class sizes, and eliminating specialists while the city keeps the money.
Worse: the city financially benefits when enrollment drops or kids miss school—both reduce what SFUSD gets and increase what goes to the city.
The ask: Redirect existing property tax dollars (already set aside for education) back to schools. No new taxes needed.
