I realize that it’s ancient history for most of today’s journalists, but they better start reading up on the Vietnam War pretty damn fast.

Just went to a used bookstore that has 350,000 books and it will surprise no one to learn that 175,000 of them were military history

Cheshire Lines Notice

These closets are intended for the convenience of passengers only, workmen, cabmen, fishporters and idlers are not permitted to use them. By Order.

"Idlers" mentioned here with a "you know who you are" lack of specificity.

UK cover. Mostly text but with a cut out showing a boy standing in front of a building holding a copy of the Irish Times with the headline reading EEC AGREEMENT A MYTH, SAYS WILSON US cover. The picture covers the whole cover and shows the same boy with the same newspaper but his head is at a slightly different angle so it's evidently a different photograph taken at the same time.

Interesting that the UK and US editions of Colm Tóibín's new book, The News from Dublin, use slightly different pictures of the same boy selling newspapers on the same day.

51st film on my German cinema watchlist is Volker Schlöndorff's MORD UND TOTSCHLAG aka A DEGREE OF MURDER (1967). Anita Pallenberg smoulders in a proto counterculture tale of a woman who enlists the help of two men to get rid of the body of the boyfriend she has shot.

Star Trek Animated: The Animated Adventures of Gene Roddenberry's Star Trek (Blu-ray, NEW) Star Trek: The Animated Series is a standalone Blu-ray set released in November 2016. The series was first released in September 2016 as part of the Star Trek 50th Anniversary TV and Movie Collection ...

Star Trek: TOS was cancelled after 3 seasons, but I always felt it played out its 5-year mission courtesy of the animated series, which ran 2 years & had the same core cast and some of the same writers and got even more philosophical. We have just 2 copies of the Blu-ray. mzs.press/Star-Trek-An...

Hit me with your last 4 on @letterboxd.social Mine include 2 rewatches, 2 new to me films. YELLOW LETTERS is excellent. SEA WOLVES is silly but impossible to totally dislike for anyone, like me, who was steeped in the second and third rate British popular culture dumped on Australia in the 70s & 80s

Poster for the film showing Lino Ventura pointing a gun at another man’s head.

CLASSE TOUS RISQUES (Claude Sautet, 1960).

A rewatch of one of my all-time favourite noirs - a superb example of the Frenchman-in-a-tench-coat genre. #FilmSky

A ★★★½ review of Heaven's Prisoners (1996) I really love the novels of James Lee Burke. Every paragraph reads like this (taken from Harbor Lights): Maybe you’ve had moments like these. You know, when you’re tired and run-down and you let your ...

Always funny when someone likes a review you've written on Letterboxd that you can't remember writing.

“It takes facts to make a word like ‘enemy’ real.”

Great little 1951 revisionist western currently streaming on C4. Van Heflin is terrific as Army Scout Jim Bridger and the Technicolor looks gorgeous.
