What a great start to the day. Decided to go check out my neighborhood under all this snow, and discovered the Kyoto Imperial Palace was open to the public today. Spent the last hour walking around taking pics.

This exactly. Justifying this with legal reasons and acting like writers are somehow nuts for even attempting to do the same thing artists have been doing, just drives me up the walls.

I don't think you are really interested in understanding what my point is which is how fandom treats writers and artists differently even if they are doing the exact same thing.

Writers even get told to commission artists to make fanart of their fanfic to make the fic more popular. And sorry, there is a certain irony in that.

and earning money from it is copyright infringement. But if a writer does it, the writer gets shamed for the same stuff artists do. And when fan art and fan merch gets copyright claimed, the IP holder is seen as the problem.

Yeah, I know that. And if you read my post, I said I don't want anything like it on Ao3.
My issue is that fandom treats fanart and fanfic earning money differently from some sort of moral standpoint not a legal one. Because from a legal standpoint there is no difference because it's both derivative

I don't want ao3 to have ads or an algorithm bc the bnf culture is terrible enough without it, but I still would like to know why earning money through fanart is morally right and even thinking about it with fanfic is brain rot.

I will forever find it in a way funny and interesting that what's absolutely accepted and kinda standard for fan art is illegal and an outrage for fanfic. While if fan art gets copyright claimed it's a huge scandal.
