I’m in Amherst Provincial Court today covering a hearing involving two Indigenous men from N.B. charged with cannabis offences. The two men want the Micmac Rights Association to represent them @ trial. The federal crown opposes that based on section 801 of the Criminal Code which limits that.

They feel the need to fish in large groups to avoid harassment from non-indigenous fishers and DFO officers who do not seem to believe a treaty right exists.

I reached out to all 20 First Nations that were issued DFO elver eel licences for comment. So far, only two have replied. One FN forwarded me a letter it sent to DFO on Mar. 1/25. Another FN granted my request for an interview. A tribal council stated it can't comment until next week.
