we remain firmly on track for 'republican president leaves the country an omnishambles, next democratic president is punished for not cleaning it up fast enough'

Just say no to reviewing if you're going to do this. WTF.

I mean they are wishing it was on numerous fronts (voting rights, women's rights, racial discrimination, foreign policy)

Check out our latest research drop! We show BLA dopamine signaling encodes the emotional weight of sensory transitions, but not the associative strength or value of stimuli. These signals dynamically rescale when the learning context changes: "this matters most!" www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1...

Graph of award probability of R35 and R01 from NIH factbook as a function of review rank percentile. As is apparent, 2025 is a significant departure, with lower award probabilities at all scores <40 and significant departures from norm, where even being in the top 10% is no longer a nearly certain indicator of success.

Data source: https://report.nih.gov/nihdatabook/report/302

The data is in: the NIH goalposts have shifted.

What were once almost certain fundable scores have become coin flips and what used to be likely grants have become aspirational, leading to fewer awards.

Another manifestation of how HHS policies have led to fewer awards and less science.

1. General Motors white collar executive
2. Upper peninsula farmer, Great Lakes freighter worker, auto mechanic

One of these is definitely tougher than the other. 🀣

That's a hell of a strawman. Of course they are complicit too. But they don't claim to oppose this administration (until after they decide to retire) and I've seen enough Collins pearl clutching to know it's never going to change.

Yeah, you're right. They're so mad, they just probably confirmed more of Trump's nominees.

In over a year they have done diddly squat. I'm glad they're saying this, but in the last two weeks they've already floated cashing on some of these issues and I will be (gladly) shocked if they don't.

Don't get me wrong. Very little. Although he at least threatened procedural block, which is more than Schumer and Jeffries have done.

Democrats: we can't possibly stand up and actually do something. People will get upset.

I don't think directors having some leeway against a hard payline is bad. I think the administration reaching into institutes to affect funding decisions is bad.

The Milky Way core on a blue sky above Joshua trees and some shrubs

Pretty cool first milky way shot of the season when you consider it's a single frame, 8 seconds, captured using a bucket as a uhhh tripod. Goodnight!

I realize it's important service, but I'm not gonna lie. It's getting hard to accept NIH study section requests when 1) they aren't funding basically anything and 2) it seems like they're just ignoring us anyway and funding what the administration deems acceptable.
