A jackdaw is a small, black bird with a short, thick bill, and a silvery-grey "shawl" around the back of its head that stands out from its black face and cap. Its most distinctive feature is its eyes: they are pale blue-grey as juveniles and become a striking, bright, pale-blueish-white as they mature. Their call is a sharp "tchack" sound.

Size: It is the smallest of the UK's crow family, with a wingspan of about 70 cm. Plumage: It has a shiny black body with a distinctive silvery-grey colour on the back of its head and neck, which contrasts with its black face and cap. Bill: The bill is short and chunky. Eyes: The adult’s pale blueish-white eyes are a key identifying feature. Juvenile jackdaws have blue-grey eyes.
