UPDATE: Statement from @rcfp.org on today's news: "[W]e know reporters will still do their jobs, and there is no shortage of legal support to back them up." www.lawdork.com/p/bondi-reve...
The US Justice Department today announced plans to revoke critical protections for journalists, releasing a memo from Attorney General Pam Bondi that directs the agency to rescind the current version of the “news media guidelines” and publish a new policy.
"Efforts to chill the legal profession from representing clients perceived as critical of the administration are a direct threat to journalists, who rely on lawyers to vindicate their First Amendment rights," said RCFP's Gabe Rottman.
RCFP joined a friend-of-the-court brief led by @aclu.org urging a court to block President Trump's executive order targeting the law firm Perkins Coie for its work on voting rights, arguing that it violates the First Amendment and could hinder newsgathering.
RCFP is urging the FCC to drop its inquiry into whether CBS News deceptively edited an interview with Kamala Harris before the 2024 election, emphasizing the danger that it could pose to a free press.
Hey Zack! Right now the credentials are only through INN. We'll keep you posted if we're able to expand.
For starters, here's a really smart piece from ED Bruce Brown and Policy Director Gabe Rottman in @columjournreview.bsky.social exploring the shifting nuance in the law around whether reporters can remain on scene at a protest after police issue a dispersal order: www.cjr.org/analysis/whe...
Still getting my sea legs (sky legs?) here, but happy to be here especially for the purposes of championing the work of @reporterscommittee.bsky.social and my colleagues. The legal threats journalists face are very real, and RCFP is the hub of support to fight back.
It's official. Reporters Committee is on Bluesky!
Looking forward to the publication of Steve Coll's The Achilles Trap next month. While going through the records Reporters Committee obtained while representing Coll, I can attest they have done a great service returning these sources to the public domain.
