I haven't read that one, but Jared Diamond's "Guns, Gems and Steel" has been very influential in my understanding of societal development over time.

I cannot think of a better marker than that. A close second could be the first planting of organized crops - as that would require giving up a nomadic lifestyle and a division of work for a group of people - some farming while others hunt.
