It was a high of 15 today, so I declare being a bed for dachshunds and lounging by the fire a very appropriate activity.

Of course the coastal/Midwest difference has been there a long while. I grew up mostly in Omaha and that area is filled with neighborhoods of big McMansions like this because people sell their small home on the coasts and then move there.

Only reason I could even afford this place here is a bough a small home (1947 Cape Cod, 1100 sq ft) in Columbus OH in 2011 post crash from under $100K and the price more than doubled.

When I sold, 2 of my offers were all cash from LLCs. Thankfully I sold to an owner occupy.

Part of the reason I'm here. I was able to complete my place for $400K here in 2023, which was still like 30% more than if it had been 2019. I'm sure an equivalent place there would be 7-figures.

It's sad that affordable homes are few & far between and being bought up by LLCs.

When I lived in Columbus, I lived in North Linden, just off North Broadway and Cleveland. That was in the heart of one of the Somali areas of Columbus. Good food options and no issues. The Somali population, like any immigrant population, just wanted to build businesses and live their lives.

The wood stove spoils me so much in the winter.

This was my first thought as well. The allure has to be strong if you are a conventionally attractive white woman as you can just ride the right-wing outrage train into television appearances and big speaking fees. The model for it has been set.

I do need to get a ramp at some point though with Max being 12.

You can’t see if from this angle, but there is a soft cushioned bench below the bed. They aren’t going from the bed to the floor.

My first dachshund I went through back surgery, so I know how those things can happen, for sure.

Relaxing with the boys by the fire makes for a nice post snowstorm evening.

American is full of ethnic areas where groups stuck together. Chicago has its Polish neighborhoods. My area in WI celebrates it's Norwegian immigrants. Heck, there is a Prague, Nebraska with nearby Czechland Lake. For the admin it's fine as long as it's European or a curiosity (Chinatown, etc.).
