Born on this day, 1976.10.04; Ueli Steck, Swiss climber, who ascended Gasherbrum II East in 2006, Gasherbrum II and Makalu in 2009, Shisha Pangma and Cho Oyu in 2011, Everest in 2012 and Annapurna I in 2013. He died in 2017 by a fall on Nuptse, aged 40.

Before setting out on Everest expedition in 1953, Tenzing Norgay sought the blessing of his mother, Kinzom, at Tengboche monastery. She wanted to be sure he was fit and well enough to go; having satisfied herself, she returned to her home.

This is Ang Rita Sherpa and Peter Jamieson on the summit of Mt #Everest (8848.86 m) OTD 07 May, 1983. This was Ang Rita's first of ten Everest Summits without using supplementary Oxygen. Ang Rita died on Sept 21, 2020, aged 72.
