The breakdown is accompanied by English translations of Law No. 3/2025 and a directive from the Indonesian Broadcasting Corporation instructing Jakarta area media outlets what aspects of the protests they can and cannot air - part of a broader agenda of state censorship to control the narrative.

Christopher Hulshof breaks down the process of remilitarization in Indonesia and the civil unrest it has precipitated this week.

Since then, civilian protests have erupted while authorities have cited Law No. 3/2025 to deploy the military in support of National Police forces, resulting in increasing violence across Indonesia’s major cities.

During the clashes on Thursday, a police armored vehicle sped through the crowds, hitting and killing 21-year-old Affan Kurniawan.

When the same DPR members then rewarded themselves with exuberant increases in compensation, frustrated Indonesians took to the streets to protest where they were met with police violence.

In March, the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR) passed Law No. 3/2025, opening the door for active-duty military personnel to return to posts within the civilian government.

The slow creep of the Indonesian military’s return to power over the past decade has reached a fever pitch since former general Prabowo Subianto became president last October.
