The India-UK trade deal was proclaimed by the media as a wonderful thing for all of us. But like most trade deals, it shifts power in favour of big business. Hereโs my take on it๐

Trade deals remain outside of the realm of democratic scrutiny - they are a perfect vehicle for elites to quietly change the rules of the game in their own interests.
We urgently need to change this, our director @nickdearden.bsky.social writes ๐

This is really important from @globaljusticenow.bsky.social - mining of 'critical minerals' is always framed as vital for the energy transition...but many of those minerals have no role in tackling climate change (and plenty of use in weapons/aerospace).

#CriticalMinerals are a key component of this transition but as this new report from @globaljusticenow.bsky.social finds, many are mined for military use, impacting environmental quality and communities in the areas they are extracted from. www.globaljustice.org.uk/resource/mat... 2/3

Our new briefing finds the often-harmful mining of these resources is being driven in a large way by militarisation

Good to see these arguments that UK mineral criticality has less to do with the green transition (a framing that is most often used in narratives), and more to do with militarisation ...
06.08.2025 10:52 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 1 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0Are all "critical minerals" really critical for the energy transition?
No, says this UK-focussed report: there's a danger of green-washing harmful resource grabs.
Our new report warns that the push by Western governments to get their hands on critical minerals, risks a neo-colonial resource grab, aimed more at military buildup than the just transition we need.

Text reads: โToo often, discussions around โcritical mineralsโ obscure the fact that huge amounts are โcriticalโ not for phasing out fossil fuels, but for the profits of the likes of the military industry - with questionable gains for ordinary people here, and devastating consequences for communities overseas. We canโt build a green future on the exploitation of poorer countries, and we donโt have to. We can achieve a green transition, but thereโs a need to transform how our economy works. By shifting our mineral demand away from militarisation and towards renewable energy generation, while embedding supply chain justice and fair terms of trade in genuinely unavoidable extraction, we can start to realise this vision.โ - Cleodie Rickard, trade campaign manager at Global Justice Now
We find the defence sector driving demand across the board and the minerals requiring the most significant increases in production are needed for EVs.
Should the military industry be getting first dibs? Should we plan a green future that relies on more privatised car ownership?
Talk around the 'green transition' often touts the need for huge increases in mineral mining.
But our findings show that small diversions of minerals from other uses would facilitate the @iea.org's renewable energy goals without the need for increasing production.

TAKE ACTION - Tell the Prime Minister to:
1. Tax the super-rich
2. Protect workers, not billionaires
3. Make polluters pay

Around the world, we're seeing amazing climate wins everyday.
It's time politicians in rich countries like the UK step up and take the threat of the climate crisis seriously!
Global South countries are already being pushed to the brink by climate change, debt, and aid cuts.
The UK must stand with Global South against unfair US trade tactics!

The India-UK trade deal perpetuates a race to the bottom on workers & human rights, made between two draconian governments that are attacking civil liberties & the multiracial working class.

The UK government prioritises corporate power financial interests over popular wellbeing by seeking ISDS inclusion in trade deals.
If you donโt know what ISDS is then do a search.
British companies & others have used it to try and bully governments into changing progressive environmental policy.
If the government wants to use trade to build a fairer and greener world, why is it pushing for corporate courts in the UK-India bilateral investment treaty?

It's an inalienable right but also... we won't do it if Israel backs off a bit.
Here's an idea - why not use the ample power you have to force Israel to stop its genocide - comprehensive sanctions.
Then also recognise Palestine because it's their inalienable right.

Giving in to Trumpโs tariff threats wonโt stop the attacks, it invites more. Governments must stop conceding ground and start defending a fairer global trade system.

Trumpโs endgame isnโt better trade policy, itโs total dominance for the corporate class.
Heโs bullying the world into deals that favor Big Oil, Big Tech, and Big Defense.
Cosying up to Trump doesn't work.
We can't give into him as he attempts to use tariffs as a tool into bullying us into giving up our rights in US-UK trade negotiations, our media manager @anita-bh.bsky.social tells BBC Scotland

We have no idea what is being traded away to secure deals with other countries, and it turns out we are not allowed to know.
So much for democracy.
