I didn't know the lack of agency ascribed to the right has a name, but of course it does: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Murc%27...

What's the point of being a billionaire if you still have to submit to the perceived alpha? Or are these people billionaires because they like submitting?

Not much of MAGA logic makes sense. But how does one end up with: "1A allows me to be an asshole whenever I want without consequences, but it doesn't protect the media from reporting on government action?"

It comes from a good, but naive place. We want to think people are good. If these people know the facts, then why are they doing bad things? It leads to a dark conclusion: They are indifferent to the damage they are causing and the suffering of others. We don't want to think that of or close ones.

His college, my alma mater, has one of the largest populations of international students. Greater than 20% at a school with freshman classes of ~4500.

Yes. But fixing bad things is always way harder than never doing that bad thing in the first place. The asymmetry in this process causes permanent damage. I don't buy the argument that people/society can't have 5% more foresight.

All Great. But why are our elections so reactionary, why didn't all these voters prevent us from needing this wave a year ago? I'm generally curious. Some segment of voters alternate between indifference and freaking out, why not just vote consistently for your values?

Colleges like lots of applicants because it allows them to pretend the have small acceptance rates. But it also means there is no way they are treating all these applications with care and human attention. Many in the UC system have over 100k applications. They created the messed up system.

24.10.2025 13:16 β€” πŸ‘ 0    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

That doesn't fix a broken system hoisted on the backs of teachers and high schools groveling for whatever colleges want. BTW I don't use AI to write letters, but I think teachers should feel free to if they want. The colleges deserve it for the awful application process they've created.

It's not so much as "if you can't beat them, join them" As it is that colleges have always been disrespectful towards teacher time when it comes to reccomendations. Since they don't respect me and my unpaid work, they haven't earned my best effort. Double so if they are going to have AI read it.

24.10.2025 13:04 β€” πŸ‘ 0    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

If colleges are using AI to read them when they have 80k applicants. Why should I spend my time on them? If they don't value them enough to have a human read them....

Local here: Two amusing things: Boston has become an amazingly safe city. Last year was lowest murder rate since 1950s! And the games are played like 45 mins away from the city in a suburban/exurban town. It's a ridiculous claim.

In this country getting educated and going to college are politically coded, especially since the pandemic/Trump I. This likely isn't as much a problem in other countries.
