24.10.2025 13:19 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Colleges like lots of applicants because it allows them to pretend the have small acceptance rates. But it also means there is no way they are treating all these applications with care and human attention. Many in the UC system have over 100k applications. They created the messed up system.
24.10.2025 13:16 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0That doesn't fix a broken system hoisted on the backs of teachers and high schools groveling for whatever colleges want. BTW I don't use AI to write letters, but I think teachers should feel free to if they want. The colleges deserve it for the awful application process they've created.
24.10.2025 13:12 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0It's not so much as "if you can't beat them, join them" As it is that colleges have always been disrespectful towards teacher time when it comes to reccomendations. Since they don't respect me and my unpaid work, they haven't earned my best effort. Double so if they are going to have AI read it.
24.10.2025 13:04 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0If colleges are using AI to read them when they have 80k applicants. Why should I spend my time on them? If they don't value them enough to have a human read them....
24.10.2025 12:08 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Local here: Two amusing things: Boston has become an amazingly safe city. Last year was lowest murder rate since 1950s! And the games are played like 45 mins away from the city in a suburban/exurban town. It's a ridiculous claim.
14.10.2025 22:27 β π 8 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0In this country getting educated and going to college are politically coded, especially since the pandemic/Trump I. This likely isn't as much a problem in other countries.
14.10.2025 11:20 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 2 π 0Trump is correct like a broken clock is correct and yet people feel it necessary to think those acts were intentional and that he deserves credit.
13.10.2025 18:19 β π 3 π 1 π¬ 0 π 0Why are The Onion and John Oliver better at journalism than journalists?

04.10.2025 19:27 β π 3 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0It still blows my mind that the 2020 combo of BLM and COVID broke a bunch of people. Like how dare we try to save lives and treat all people kindly and justly? Like this is what broke you?
03.10.2025 13:27 β π 78 π 1 π¬ 2 π 0Real shame because John Dickerson is the best. Kind and Smart and Incisive. In fact, I can't imagine he lasts long under this mess.
02.10.2025 23:02 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0As a society we just not willing to pay what it costs to educate students in both tails of the distribution. Which is a shame. Because we have the money.

30.09.2025 12:57 β π 3 π 1 π¬ 1 π 0Does this play well to 80% of Americans? I doubt it, but do wonder.
30.09.2025 12:48 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0The degree to which the state government of Louisiana hates both its own citizens and its economically most important asset is wild. Like what does the economy (and state tax revenues) of LA look like without NOLA?
30.09.2025 12:04 β π 3 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0It wouldnβt even take 20 GOP moderates to break ranks and save democracy. And they refuse to do it. Blaming even the worst democrats is wrong in this case.
29.09.2025 22:22 β π 12 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Not that Trump deals with subtlety, but I was surprised he called the attack anti-Christian, when a whole bunch of the Christian right doesnβt consider LDS Christian at all.

19.09.2025 12:49 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0This is totally learned in high school debate team. Or mock trial or model UN. Where you can argue whatever you want and you get style points. Truth and justice and morality are irrelevant.

15.09.2025 18:37 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Yes. But this does not remove agency from people that have a naive view of their heroes. Ignorance is often a choice.

13.09.2025 22:37 β π 10 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Civility has become a weapon. Those under assault need to express their grievances in exactly the right way. Otherwise those in power don't have to listen. Or can even use such uncivil requests as a reason to further tighten then noose.
