Hard to shake the suspicion that all the anti-PC backlash, edgy comedian woke-gone-mad stuff was raptors testing the fences of discourse, gnawing away until the progressive current to grew weak enough to let their monstrous opinions burst through.

I do not think so good, but to compensate, I also do not write so well.

I liked the Sydney Sweeney, especially the part where she turned to the camera and said she was a communist, and then specified she was exactly the same kind of communist I am... but with boobies (leftishly).

Two things:

1. Absolutely no one cares what the opposition party's policy platform is 1.5/3.5 years out from an election.

2. I think anything we can do to make an ICE agent 10% less likely to crack the skull of a vaguely hispanic looking bystander is good policy, actually.

Something every Democrat can and should do is calmly announce that when next in power they will fully fund, staff, and empower investigations into any and all abuses of power in these four years - and will not let the "look to the future" fetishists in the NYT Editorial Board talk them out of it.

Yes, though that's harder to regulate because it applies to deployment.

One regulatory change I'd like to see around AI is the requirement that it has to tell you it's AI if you directly ask it.

Hard code that shit in and do not let anyone running a chatbot prompt their way out of it... or face massive fines.

Reminder: Trump's recollection of his first term is that he followed his gut instincts and the resulting economy was so good that four years later people rewarded him with the popular vote win, all the swing states, and a majority in both Houses of Congress, out of sheer nostalgia for it.

The most realistic part of Iron Man is when he invents a bunch of combat drones so that he personally does not have to risk his once-in-a-generation-mind in shoot-outs with heavily armed mercenaries fifteen times a week.

At least until Black Panther II there was some allowances made for the idea that being a genius inventor and a titanium boned ninja-assassin capable of going hand-to-hand with squads of Spec Ops aren't likely to be overlapping Venn Diagram Circle skillsets.

But Trump ended up at the table with the EU too, and the end result is better for the EU than it is for China..?

Hell, the UK got a decent deal without even considering retaliation...

Has it?

Their tariffs into the US are twice to three times as high as what the EU and Japan got.

Not sure any approach can be definitively said to have triumphed.

When business groups judge a government has firmly decided to do something they don't like, they often cut their losses and stop criticising it because their cost-benefit analysis says that speaking out won't stop it but could piss off the government, get them frozen out, or worse.

See: Brexit.

02.08.2025 09:43 β€” πŸ‘ 99    πŸ” 13    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 1

When governments are doing dumb shit, the HOW still matters a huge amount to business because the implementation of a bad idea can either mitigate or exacerbate the damage to your interests.

Businesses therefore mitigate their criticism of the "what" to try and get traction on the "how".

02.08.2025 09:40 β€” πŸ‘ 63    πŸ” 4    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 1

The boring but horrifying explanation for this is that businesses do not want to risk angering a vengeful Trump administration that has proven it won't hesitate or be constrained by norms and laws in weaponising against critics every lever of power it can reach.

Dennis Duffy: [enters house on Dateline NBC] Hello?
Chris Hansen: Good evening, sir. I'm Chris Hansen with Dateline NBC. Can I ask you what you're doing here tonight?
Dennis Duffy: Oh, yeah, I'm here to boff some chick named Mary.
Chris Hansen: Boff some chick?
Liz Lemon: [watching Dateline] Oh, my God.
Chris Hansen: Do you know how old Mary is?
Dennis Duffy: Yeah, uh, 22. I think.
Chris Hansen: You wanna try again?
Dennis Duffy: [runs into the room and turns off TV] Crap. That girl said she was 16, but I swear to God, I could tell she was 22.

If you'd asked 100 trade policy experts in March which two countries would have the largest US tariffs on the first day of August, I don't think many would have said "Switzerland and Brazil."

Truly the @alanbeattie.bsky.social observation holds: "It's Trump's trade policy, no one knows anything."

Import Duty Calculator Calculate import duty and taxes in the web-based calculator. It's fast and free to try and covers over 100 destinations worldwide.

Short answer: tariff rates will apply to the >$800 export, and probably to the >$30 as well if you ship it after the De Minimis elimination date of August 29.

I would use something like this to try and get your answer, if you can't afford a customs professional:

Impossible Trade Promises | ExplainTrade Why Smart People Promise Trump Impossible Things

New article from me ruminating on why so many of the Trump deals include commitments in areas like investment levels his partners can't possibly control living up to.
