Yorks (sometimes called the 'Cathedral of the Colne Valley') dates from 1894 & was designed by Hodgson Fowler of Durham assisted by James Kirk of Marsden. The church opened in 1895. The original design for the church dated from 1865 by William Henry Crossland /1

Great meet up today of our MI transcription team to plan work in the graveyard surrounding the former St John's Church in Newsome, now The Newsome Centre. There will be an exhibition of the work we are undertaking at Heritage Open Days at the church on Saturday and Sunday 13 and 14 September 2025.

Subjects taught were reading, composition, geography, writing, maths, grammar, singing & science. It was used as Town School & as a library. /1

Like other similar institutions, it eventually had a pseudonym (North Spring House) that was used on death certificates, probates, newspaper notices, etc, to avoid stigma.

Jefferys' 1771 map also gives the location of Robin Hood's Grave at Kirklees Hall (formerly the site of Kirklees Priory where supposedly the outlaw met his end) which was the seat of Sir George Armytage who is believed to have erected the current enclosed folly.
