Obviously people still wanted to be popular but it felt less motivated by money and status than every other alternative. Tumblr is the only other large platform I can think of that had that, it just never had the legitimacy of Twitter.

Twitter was only ever good because it was the largest platform where people weren't constantly trying to make a living off of it. Even the big awful accounts could barely call themselves "influencers" in the way people on insta or whatever else could.
