Release the goats

I've written a series of short stories inspired by Agile values and the power of communication.
Below is a short introduction — follow the link to read the full tale.

Per Romei, Agile no consisteix a seguir rituals sinó a construir una relació de confiança orientada al valor i adaptada a la incertesa. Aquesta visió, encara que radical, s’alinea molt amb la realitat canviant dels negocis i obre la porta a una col·laboració més honesta i efectiva.

2. Responsabilitat compartida. El desenvolupador no és un “recurs” que pica codi; és un agent actiu en la creació de valor.

3. Iteració contínua. El cicle aprendre-fer-avaluar ha de ser curt, gairebé diari.

Què implica això pels equips?

1. Autonomia radical. L’equip ha de prendre decisions tècniques i de prioritat sense demanar permís constant.

Exemple: En un projecte web per una ONG, en lloc de demanar una “intranet amb fórums i permisos”, es treballa plegats per veure com millorar la comunicació interna. Potser una combinació de Slack, Google Drive i algunes automatitzacions ja resol el problema en menys temps i cost.

Això implica:

Reduir les especificacions tancades.

Millorar la comunicació diària.

Compartir objectius i entendre el per què darrere del què.

Del control a la confiança, del detall al propòsit

La idea clau que travessa totes les seves propostes és aquesta: les relacions de treball han de canviar de lògica contractual a lògica de confiança orientada al propòsit.

Exemple: En comptes de fer un pressupost per implementar una funcionalitat concreta, Jacopo proposa al client començar per una setmana de treball intens per investigar i dissenyar conjuntament la millor solució possible. El que es factura és aquesta setmana de col·laboració, no el producte final.

Això vol dir:

Cap promesa de resultat, només compromís a treballar amb qualitat.

Dret a aturar el projecte en qualsevol moment, per part de qualsevol dels dos (client o proveïdor).

Pagament per temps col·laboratiu efectiu, no per “hores facturables”.

Els “extreme contracts”: confiança sense ingenuïtat

Un dels seus conceptes clau és el d’extreme contracts, acords breus i radicals que reflecteixen la realitat de treball col·laboratiu: basats en compromisos mutus, transparència i adaptabilitat.

Això permet al client aturar-se quan ha rebut prou valor, o pivotar si veu que les prioritats canvien. Aquesta lògica s'apropa més a la compra d’un servei intel·ligent que no pas a la compra d’un objecte a mida.

En comptes de signar un contracte per una aplicació completa en 6 mesos per 60.000 €, es prefereix un enfoc de cicles curts: per exemple, entregues quinzenals de valor real per 5.000 € cada cop.

En lloc de definir projectes amb pressupostos fixos i llistes tancades de funcionalitats, Romei proposa una relació basada en el compromís iteratiu:

“No em comprometis a entregar-te X pel dia Y, compromet-te tu a validar constantment si el que fem crea valor.”

Agile, és una resposta estratègica a la incertesa. En un món on els requisits canvien constantment i el valor de negoci es descobreix sovint a mesura que es construeix el producte, la flexibilitat no és un luxe: és una necessitat per sobreviure.

5. Agile & Taoism

Taoist (Laozi’s Tao Te Ching) promotes natural flow, simplicity, and non-forcing (wu wei).

Teams are encouraged to self-organize, rather than follow rigid command-and-control hierarchies.

Metaphors like water flowing around obstacles are akin to Agile teams adapting to change.

4. Agile & Stoicism

Control what you can, accept what you can't → Agile encourages short feedback loops and responding to what is revealed.

Daily reflection (used in Stoic journals) mirrors daily standups and retrospectives in Agile.

Aristotle’s virtue ethics: Focuses on habitual excellence through practice → echoes Agile’s iterative delivery and craftsmanship.

Heraclitus: “The only constant is change” → the very essence of Agile adaptability.

Socrates: Encouraged dialogue, questioning, and collaborative discovery → aligns with Agile practices like retrospectives and team collaboration.

3. Agile & Ancient Greek Philosophy

Greek thinkers also touched on ideas similar to Agile:

The Middle Way: Avoiding extremes → Agile avoids the extremes of rigid planning or chaotic execution.

Non-attachment: Clinging to fixed outcomes causes suffering → Agile says value working software over comprehensive documentation.
