I realize that to people outside the PNW this is just an interesting news item, but if you're in the PNW, where tracking orca pods is a local religion, this is basically like being visited by alien gods

Fun fact: in Italy in-person voting is the only option, but you can get a 70% discount on train tickets on a return ticket to your municipality of residence, but in case of inspection you have to show your voter card to the conductor, and it must be stamped to confirm you voted for the return trip.

Up through the 1930s, State Fairs across America featured head on collisions between trains. The first occurred at the Iowa State Fair in 1896 before a crowd of 20,000. This video is from the Minnesota State Fair during the Great Depression, as featured in the poster below:

How knitting can help you kick harmful habits From preventing nail-biting and doomscrolling all the way up to helping people addicted to drugs, knitting can have a surprisingly powerful affect on your brain.

Love this! 👇

I wonder if I'll ever not be startled by the snow-to-no-snow transition.

Weirdly, it doesn't affect me the other way. Like trees losing their leaves.

When something familiar is gone, it's a bit of a shock, moreso than when something new is added, (like snow).

You have to love that Tolkien couldn’t stop writing about the little world he made. He had maps, he had functional languages, he had little recipes for his little hungry hobbits, and 90% of this stuff wasn’t ever meant to be published, he just loved his creation and enjoyed visiting and taking notes

Ahhh...melting snow that reveals the trash our student neighbours have pitched into our yard.

My kids reluctantly handed over to me their treasured finds: two mangled video game controllers, two vapes (one still flashing a light). Sigh.

St Patrick Day is around the corner. We're prepared.

And in addition to younger people who did form households owning at lower rates than their peers across time and space, younger people are forming households (of any tenure) at lower rates. @lausterna.bsky.social and I decomposed this into a dual measure of housing frustration.

Maud Lewis sits at a small table in a brightly decorated room, smiling warmly while holding a paintbrush and a small object in her hands. She wears a floral apron over a green dress and a headscarf. Around her are painting supplies, including jars, brushes, and a dark container on the table. The walls and nearby surfaces are covered with colorful folk-art paintings of flowers, animals, and simple scenes, filling the small space with bright reds, yellows, greens, and blues. Sunlight from the right side illuminates her face and the cluttered painting area.

If there was a surface, Maud Lewis painted on it.
She turned her small home into a colourful work of art.
While she was born with birth defects, she never let that stop her from capturing the beauty she saw in the world.
This is her story.

My eyes are popping out of my head reading this. 16 units, as type 1 diabetic?! Horrifying.

"When my blood sugar was 508, I was administered 16 units of NovoLog, which was far too much for my body. I warned staff but my concerns were ignored. My blood sugar dropped rapidly, causing insulin shock."

There is a legal provision in immigration law that someone married to a US citizen can stay in the US while there visa is pending. Immigration officials have long recognized it to allow residency during the wait time. The DHS has just stopped following this part of the law.
