I think it also hits a balance that Disney's failed to hit exactly for a while now of letting the girls be cool and powerful AND have a romance-ish (not fully realized so great for fandom/those who yearn) subplot that was *relevant to the themes* but Not the main focus
Agree! I think also a huge part is that I think we as a world have forgotten the power the Teen Girl Audience has over pop culture (see; the pop girlie renaissance) and KPDH feels like the first film in so long to actually care to appeal & speak to that audience & let the Coolness be the appeal
