Yea, the BART is very LIRR-brained with its branches all feeding a central main line, which hurts intra-East Bay trip capture for sure. WMATA has three main lines (Red, Yellow/Green and Orange/Blue/Silver) and so can run 3x the number of trains on its branches.

I’d add a counterfactual: That BART kept the financial district, Embarcadero, Market St relevant as shipping, shipbuilding and manufacturing in the city proper collapsed. And as office park land (Walnut Creek etc) boomed. Tech wouldn’t make its way up the Peninsula for another 20-30 years.
