"There is a deep asymmetry in the aggressor destroying infrastructure and taking lives while the defender faces multibillion claims for sanctioning suspicious investors,โ said Svitlana Romanko, Founder of RazomWeStand ๐บ๐ฆ

Camille Corcoran also previously reported on ISDS claims brought against the Netherlands by Shell and Exxon, which have further developed in recent weeks.

The financial stakes of ISDS claims can be devastating. Corcoran previously reported on a 2019 ISDS case where Pakistan was ordered to pay Australian mining company Tethyan Copper more than US$5.8 billion.

Three ISDS claims against Ukraine have ties to Russian-Israeli billionaire Mikhail Fridman. He is using a Luxembourg subsidiary of ABH Holdings to sue Ukraine for US$1 billion, after the country nationalised Sense Bank.

Corcoran previously interviewed Dr Patricia Ranald, convener of AFTINET, who noted โWith national court systems you have independent judges, you have a system of precedents. ISDS doesnโt have any of that.โ

Since being invaded in 2022, Ukraine has faced 8 ISDS claims, which โare a mechanism built into many bilateral and multilateral treaties that enables governments to be sued by foreign investors if their investment in that country is threatened".

"The devastation Ukraine has suffered under Russian invasion has been observed worldwide, but an accompanying threat has gone unnoticed: the rise of secretive legal challenges from foreign corporations..."

โCarbon capture is a โmiracleโ technology that causes more harm than good, serving primarily as a means for the fossil fuel industry to reinvent itself.โ

Carbon capture does not reduce emissions - three case studies to prove it. Instead, carbon capture causes more harm than good, and only serves to prolong fossil-fuel industries

โDrax breached environmental laws more than 3 times a day on average,โ writes Camille Corcoran
Drax has violated its permit regulations over 6,000 times in Louisiana, a new investigation by Land and Climate Review has found:
"Drax has taken the best of what they had left: their peace, #cleanair, and health." Read how #Drax's subsidies in the UK enable its #biomass burning in Gloster, Mississippi, at the expense of the community's health.

Despite accumulating more than $6.1 million in fines since 2019, critics say Draxโs compliance measures still need tightening. โIt likely was a slap on the wrist for the company, the cost of doing business,โ Jen Duggan, Executive director of the Environmental Integrity Project, told Corcoran.

In 2024, Corcoran and @bertiehb.bsky.social interviewed residents in Gloster, the community closest to Drax's Mississippi pellet mill. Residents described various respiratory and cardiovascular issues, although Drax denies any causal link to its facility.

The new Land and Climate Review investigation, first reported in The Sunday Times @thetimes.com, comes just after the UK government extended Draxโs subsidies for another five years. It follows LCR's previous investigations that revealed more than 11,000 other permit breaches at Draxโs mills.
3/6
Camille Corcoran uncovered legal documents which revealed Drax breached permit limits at least 6,714 times at its Louisiana mills. These breaches include the release of hazardous and carcinogenic substances such as particulate matter, carbon monoxide and volatile organic compounds.

Drax has been caught with an additional 6,000 environmental breaches at its Louisiana pellet mills, bringing the biomass companyโs total US violations to 18,092.
