I would suggest that $ put into preserving habitats and wild ecosystems is far more effective and important than $ put into wildlife 'rescue', by a long, long way.

I guess it just doesn't come with cute fluffy animals as instagramable photo opportunities though.

Australian Magpie
Contrary to what people from overseas are led to believe, this is the most terrifying wildlife that you will encounter in this country.
At least in those months of the year that make up swooping season.

Seems like you have the exactly the same model anti-raptor system as I do! Zero cost and has been 100% effective so far.

Fortunately I have a raptor detection and interception system set up at my place to protect my girls

Eastern Grey joey with very big ears standing up straight. Mother is behind it and looking in the other direction.

When they aren't randomly leaping in front of your car in the dark and the fog, kangaroos are kinda cute 🦘

I watched Memoirs of a Geisha on SBS the other night because I remember I enjoyed the novel when I read it last century.

What a difference a few decades make.
Hints of paedophilia and totally obvious that it was a female perspective written by a man.

Eeek. Can't believe I was once that clueless.

Female Yellow-tailed Black Cockatoo sitting on a Banksia bush

My Bluesky feed is full of horrors so it is time for a bird photo.

A regular visitor to my garden that kindly lends a hand with pruning.

@albomp.bsky.social if you wish to support an illegal and unjustified war then feel free to quit parliament and head off to the Middle East. No one is going to miss you.
But how dare you say that Australia supports it.
This country is full of good people. You, however, are not one of them.

Photo of book cover. David Szalay 'Flesh'.

Book #2 for 2026. Booker Prize winner 'Flesh' by David Szalay.

Didn't like this one. The characters were too shallow to be interesting. I figure that was the whole point of the novel but...yawn

Too many cliches. Too much male sexual fantasy. Not enough depth.

I didn't bother

I thought them blocking age-restricted content might be a good thing because I don't want that sort of stuff in my feed anyway.

But I still got heaps of ads for adult toys so don't know if anything is actually restricted besides DMs 🤷‍♀️

Photo of book cover:
Design is an aerial photo of cultivated fields of varied shades of green, yellow and brown.
'Simon Winchester. LAND. How the Hunger for Ownership Shaped the Modern World'
There's also a few complimentary quotes from various newspapers scattered around the cover but they are not very important so won't write them out here

Book #1 for 2026
Land by Simon Winchester
After failing dismally in an effort to read a decent number of books in 2025 my goals are low for this year but I'm off the blocks.

A very good read that makes you realise that land ownership is a bit crazy and the root of a lot of today's big problems.

I don't have a subscription but am presuming they mean preventative controlled burns rather than back-burning.

Unfortunately in Victoria I feel that fire prevention works are more about delivering easy $ to preferred contractors than about actually reducing fire risk. It's poor use of public money.

Why don't you resign and go be a tradie then?
You are awful as PM and are damaging the nation.
You support fossil fuel companies destroying our future and a genocidal foreign regime just because they give you donor dollars.
Your moral failures hurt all Australians. We do not want to side with evil.

Maybe.
It was a family trust that donated. The envoy has not categorically stated it was not her.
Weasel words make me suspicious.

Well it seems they are still more concerned about the graves of people that died in combat decades ago rather than civilians that are dying today or the destruction of the homes of people that are still alive.
Unbelievable

Australia vows to repair ‘distressing’ damage to war graves in Gaza bulldozed by Israeli army Satellite photographs show rows of gravestones removed and soil disturbed at the Gaza War Cemetery where more than 250 Australians are buried

So is it more 'distressing' for graves to be damaged than have little children sleeping in tents blown to pieces during a 'ceasefire'?

If you listen to our media you would think so. What is wrong with journalism in this country?

Its how long our country has been settled by people.

But our current flag only represents a bit over 200 years which is the main reason I am not a big fan.

Close up of Brown Goshawk head frowning while looking at the camera through some twigs

Ambush Hunter

A Brown Goshawk ready to pounce.

I was once swooped by one of these guys. No idea why. I guess I was unwittingly near a nest. Or it took offence to my photography skills.

I promise you if you think being swooped by a Magpie is bad, these are a hell of a lot scarier.

I think circumstances will work in the Greens favour.

As we endure this weather, as fires and floods threaten us, as the insurance crisis gathers momentum and the housing crisis keeps building people are going to look for more progressive options.

The teals to then hold the balance of power.

The last few weeks have been incredibly troubling.
We need some more sane analysis out there as the msm narrative is ludicrous verging on insulting.

As much as everyone deserves a holiday we really need #thesundayshot back.

Looking forward to their thoughts on the hate speech laws in particular.

Good excuse to get a new national flag - a better one.

If it represents the tens of thousands of years of history of our country, as it should, you can bet that the racists won't touch it.

If like me, you are afraid, anxious, and concerned about the incredible and almost unbelievable heat across Australia, be sure to remember that this is brought to you by endless government ineptitude, fossil fuel company greed and media complicity.

I’m so fucking furious.

Then they wouldn't be independent. Their appeal is that they are there representing their electorates only. The instant they form a party, the voice of their voters is stifled.

I'm saying this as someone in an electorate represented in parliament by an independent.

Today I heard a loud bird call I couldn't place.
I tracked it down to find this. Don't think I have ever heard a wedgie talk before!
