Latest Trump Executive Order cruelly targets people experiencing homelessness, people with mental illness, and people who use substances

The order, issued July 24, directs federal agencies to prioritize efforts that shift “homeless individuals into long-term institutional settings… through use of civil commitment”; provide assistance to state and local governments to adopt civil commitment and institutional treatment”; enforce prohibitions on “open illicit drug use” and “urban camping”; “remove encampments”; expand drug courts’; end support for “housing first” policies; and end grants that fund harm reduction and safe consumption.”

“Under the guise of “restoring order,” this order attempts to erase evidence-based approaches like harm reduction, decimate social service infrastructure, and reintroduce the kind of punitive policies that disproportionately target Black, Brown, Indigenous, LGBTQ+, and unhoused communities. While the highest office in the land uses stigmatizing language to describe people in crisis, we offer compassion, healthcare, housing support, and a path toward healing. We are proud to co-sponsor SB 41: Regulating Pharmacy Benefit Managers 

This bill would strengthen regulation of these corporations, helping control costs of HIV treatment, hepatitis C, PrEP, and other drugs.

SFAF is proud to co-sponsor AB 554: Increasing Access to Injectable PrEP  

The bill strengthens state laws mandating that health insurance companies provide all PrEP medications (including injectable options), plus PrEP lab tests and office visits,at no cost to consumers.

By allowing data sharing between the California Department of Public Health and Medi-Cal managed care plans, SB 278 would help identify Medi-Cal members experiencing poor HIV health outcomes—ensuring they get the extra care and support they need.⁠
