In 1965, Tom Lehrer wrote and performed both a song lampooning Wernher von Braun and a song about nuclear proliferation in which Alabama is a punchline. Would he and his audience have known that von Braun developed ICBMs in Alabama? Oh man, now you've done it. *cracks knuckles* My apologies for the length of this in advance, but this is right up my alley.

In 1965, Tom Lehrer wrote and performed both a song lampooning Wernher von Braun and a song about nuclear proliferation in which Alabama is a punchline. /u/reindeerflot1lla details just how well this joke would have landed with audience, and what they knew about these connections.

What is/was the "new math" method mentioned by Tom Lehrer? "New Math" was one of many post-Sputnik curricular reforms in mathematics.

What is/was the "new math" method mentioned by Tom Lehrer? Many people have asked AskHistorians to sort it out. This time @wellerstein.bsky.social is added to the conversation to explain what the plan was.

Tom Lehrer says of Franco that "though he may have won all the battles we had all the good songs". How, accurate is this. What was the general state of art and media on both sides. This is a good question, and one that highlights the cultural impact of the Spanish Civil War - not just within Spain, but as a cultural touchstone across Europe (and the world).

Touching on cultural impacts, @fraserraeburn.bsky.social examines lyrics out of Tom Lehrer’s β€œThe Folksong Army” that declare of Franco that "though he may have won all the battles we had all the good songs". But how true is that #Skystorians?

Hi, I am Oz Frankel, Professor of History at the New School for Social Research in New York City, here to discuss and answer questions about my recent book, Coca-Cola, Black Panthers, and Phantom Jets: Israel in the American Orbit, 1967-1973 (Stanford UP) In the late 1960s, Israel became more closely entwined with the United States not just as a strategic ally but also through its intensifying intimacy with American culture, society, and technology. Coca-Cola, Black Panthers, and Phantom Jets shows how transatlantic exchanges shaped national sentiments and private experiences in a time of great transition, forming a consumerist order, accentuating social cleavages, and transforming Jewish identities.

#AMA time! #Skystorians can swing by AskHistorians to chat with Dr. Oz Frankel about his new book "Coca-Cola, Black Panthers, and Phantom Jets: Israel in the American Orbit, 1967-1973", & about Israel & America's deeply entwined relationship with culture, society, and technology!
