Graphic with txt: Anti-aliasing is a technique used in computer graphics to smooth out jagged edges. Often it’s used to make something look more realistic—less rigidly computational. But in order to do this, a sort of blurring of edges happens and that is the trade-off. Things become more recognizable and familiar by smudging the boundaries between them. An object alone can’t blur; it must blur together with something else. These days, in the physical realm, so much human thought and energy is doing just the opposite. Those in power seek to fixate the edges of our lives and identities. So much math and brute force is in service to this purpose alone, be that in secret or in plain sight. It’s ironic that as we are getting “blurred” in our digital skin, our physical selves are being more and more confined. In the process, we are becoming encrusted with ideologies that harden our edges and our love.

Chicago Art Department hosting a small but mighty student fair!

The sum of reasons doesn’t always add up, but the feeling remains. Here, effort is rewarded with more effort, so you have to make sure your orientation is guided by your willingness to share. The reward is the company we keep.

There is a ceiling to this city, though, and it's about facing yourself. If you try to be extractive, it gives you nothing. If you are a supplier of vision, it gives you elbow room. Doleful and warm. Is it the humble flatness? The waning promise of modernism? The polarity of the local climate.
